You wanted a game about Golden Age of pirates of Caribbean? With a sane plot, sea battles, boarding fights, good quests, simple but not stupid leveling system?
You got it here.
It's not a "cinematographic dynamic action" like Assassin's Creed - Black Flag, it's not a hardcore simulator of naval battles and sword/musket combat, it's a fine middle line between these two.
And this is definitely the best game in the "Corsairs" series, truly a game "made by gamers for gamers".
I outspokenly recommend it to all fans of "pirate games".
Been looking for a buggier, 3d version of Sid Meier's Pirates! Well look no further mates. This game is by far the pinnacle of the handful of video games that cover the golden age of piracy. What makes this game so good? Well, like Pirates! You have complete freedom. (Assuming you don't choose the Peter Blood start which, like most of the 'quests' is a truly terrible representation of the game.)
Imagine a game like Elite Dangerous, or EVE, You are the captain of your own destiny and fate. Your decisions will make or break you. Its a unique feeling. In few other games will you have to micrmanage your ship and crew. To decide what kind of Captain you are going to be. Load up on goods and cargo and trade? Perhaps charter your ship out to shops, and ferry their goods within a time limit for massive profits? Perhaps things went badly and your trades all went belly up. You accidentally took illegal goods into port and the law is coming after you? Or maybe you just want to declare war upon the world. Attacking merchants and navy ships and becoming the kind of monster that Blackbeard would have feared.
This game lets you live a second life. It lets you have a true adventure around the carribbean. Its also incredibly difficult. Learning the awful UI takes persistance. Learning the basic act of sailing requires even more. Mastering the ship to ship combat, and then fencing? Good luck. But weeks after you install it, and you have that shiny new 4th rate Frigate, and you are sailing into the port in Grand Turks to offload your ill-gotten goods, a few thoughts will occur to you.
Maybe I should dump this chainshot, and pick up some more grapeshot? I mean really, raising the black is more satisfying than trading. Perhaps I should hire some more crew to make boarding easier? Wait... no... really I should get a better sword for duals.
That's the moment when you realize your freedom. When this game shines. Also. Gentleman of Fortune Mod is pretty much required. Google it.
This is THE pirate game and that's pretty much it. There's not much more I can say that hasn't already been said in reviews, except that you need to get the mods for this. Specifically the 3.2 combined mod. Just check out Piratesahoy! and you'll find them.
Buy this and you will not be disappointed. However, for even more, you MUST download the two major mods and play with either... The original Combined Mod 3.2 or the newer Gentleman of Fortune. Think of these mods like the XCOM Long War mods.. essential addons that add so much more to the game.
The game focuses heavily on what a pirate game should be about: piracy, trading and epic naval battles.
It's basically a "limited open-world" that puts your tactical skills to the test.
But if you ever should bore from trading and being a pirate, then be an adventurer and discover treasure, lost cities, encounter curses and the undead.
Your decisions in the game can make or break you and there's nothing holding your hand or trying to guide you through the game. If you don't use your wits you will not progress through the game.
This game ties so much different aspect into one epic playthrough that you will come to love. That being said the game also have some real re-playability. Initially you can start out as one of three different characters and make different choices when it comes to the different factions in the game. Sid Meiers' pirates! is the childrens version of this game and even though AC: Black Flag boasts better graphics, there is only one king of the pirate games. This is it. Just play the game and enjoy the awesomeness of it all. And then... PiratesAhoy.net !!!MODS!!!
