Imagine a world created out of insanity – deformed children, ancient gods, ghosts from your past in the house inside of a water reflection. You are an asylum patient and you have just survived a car crash – the problem is you can't remember anything. Visions reveal answers to some questions, but create even more riddles! Which part of it is true? What do all these things mean?
Sanitarium is one of the few psychological horror adventure games. As the protagonist you will visit five different worlds full of riddles and answers, with which you will have to figure out what exactly is happening and what is real. The story is so incredibly good and enthralling that it could easily drive a sane person mad.
One of the most immersive and chilling psychological horror games ever created
Discover what your warped mind is hiding under the veil of a psychedelic dream
Explore surreal worlds inhabited by crazy, half-sane and or half-dead characters
I had a couple of crashes. Overall the game was stable enough to keep me motivated.
Quick save/quick load hotkeys would not work for me.
Hint: If you see some weird colored pixels, try alt-tabbing out of the game and back in again.
The walking mechanics (hold right click) are annoying at first.
The majority of the gameflow is intuitive. Most puzzles can be learned by trial/error.
Many people will like this game because of its immersive and interesting psychedelic setting. However, gameplay-wise, it's simply not challenging enough. The puzzles are easy and the solutions are mostly as clear as day, so I'm afraid that overall this game is pretty average — perhaps this was done intentionally to assure that the game will flow from scene to scene seamlessly. But for me, the lack of challenge bugged me more than anything, so I can't really give this game anything more than three stars.
Would recommend to those who play adventure games for the story and the atmosphere, though.
This is really the perfect setup. Incredible art, jaw-dropping effects, convincing narrative and voice acting, intelligent puzzles, friendly UI ...
So, then, why am I giving it 2 stars?
About halfway through the game, things start changing. First, you become a comic book action - thing - wandering through repetitive tunnel structures, and then it goes downhill. The story starts turning cheesy, the clues alternate between directions and misdirections, more than riddles they are either very direct or just ambiguous meaning it turns into pixel hunting.
I don't want to spoil too much, but when it touches history all of the great world-building completely falls apart. It's not dumb fun in a campy sort of way, more like dreary and unimaginative. The great voice acting completely falls as well and that is when pixel hunting ramps up. Walking becomes buggy, the story makes little attempt at making any sense of this. In short, it becomes a chore, and when I'm working I ask for pay, rather than purchasing.
It's regretful because the setup could be for one of the greatest games ever created and it seems to others that is the case. If you know a little bit of history you may find the hamfisted approach not worth the absolute lack of beta testing that section implies. Honestly, I didn't finish it, I moved on to better things such as Planescape Torment. It's up to you, it's your time and your money. Maybe if you temper your expectations you'll enjoy I sadly was very pampered with the incredible setup so that felt like a shower in battery acid. Not painful at first but it was burning before I dropped this (PS wear gloves, battery acid has a delayed discomfort)
PS Bought this at Waldo's 1 dollar mart, and I can't think of a more fitting place for it. It's a shame really, it had so much potential.
I am not one to write negative reviews of things for no apparent reason, but I think this games has been seriously overrated by some people. There is a reason this game has been forgotten - it is simply a bad game.
I had bought this game at 50% off during a sale, and I still think I paid too much. It is supposed to be a psychological horror themed adventure, however when playing the actual game it soon turns out that the "psychological horror" was simply an excuse for the developers to link several different levels together, which haven't got anything in common with each other. I have to admit that out of the 9 chapters the first 4 were promising, but after that the the whole thing goes down the drain right until it hits a very anti-climatic bottom. The narrative had the potential to tell a story which could have been disturbing and moving at the same time, but it just ended up as a complete mess. The game is stale, the characters are cardboard cutouts, and after the 4th chapter the eerie atmosphere completely dissolves. As for the gameplay, the puzzles are uninspired and boring, the "action" parts are really unnecessary, and the icing on the cake are the bad controls.
It doesn't matter whether you are an adventure game or psychological horror fan (or both), avoid this game. GOG has a lot of good adventures in it's repertoire, but this is certainly isn't one of them. And if you're looking for a good psycho-horror game experience, try your luck with Silent Hill2 (if you haven't already), or, if you don't mind platformers, American McGee'se Alice. Hopefully at least one of them will find it's way to GOG someday.
The idea of the game and the car models and parts are great. The multiplayer is frought with issues, particularly saving and the guest rejoining. My friend and I have had to reload very old saves losing progress too many times. May revisit the game in the future, if I read the multiplayer is working.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
