Shiny's finest hour

Shiny is a company that I've long had a soft spot for. Their off-the-wall sense of humor has tended to make for games that are quite memorable, if not always as playable as one might hope. But Sacrifice isn't just quirky and funny, although it very much is those things. It's also a brilliant piece of game design. Every trip through the singleplayer mode can get you an different mix of units and spells to work with to solve the unique conundrums presented. Every unit has its own personality and role. There are no simple palette swaps here. And the focus on your wizard makes for a uniquely personal RTS. It's not without its flaws. The game doesn't play much like others on the market and it doesn't do all that much to ease the new player in. The soul resource system is clever but can result in either quick formation of an insurmountable lead, or incessant inconclusive skirmishes with no real gain or loss to either side since lost souls are simply recouped rather than switching hands. And I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the levels are genuinely a little too hard. But it's still one of my all-time favorites, and I really wish Shiny had continued to show this level of creativity rather than being tapped to make Matrix games. (The less said about -those-, the better.)

Yet another review of a great game

This game is one of my all time favourites. It has lots of rough edges, like all the other games Shiny ever made, but just like most of them this game feels really inspired, a first of its kind that didn't pull any punches and strived for something new and different, something unique, something gloriously shiny. At its root an RTS, but presented as a third person action game, you wield powerful magic and commandeer an ever growing force of assorted monsters across vast fields to destroy the base of your enemies. While progressing through the game you also get to choose different factions, represented by a pantheon of bickering gods, that influence the story and your powers, giving the game even more replay value beside what every strategy game usually allows for. The graphics and controls are obviously from its time and didn't age overly well, but the game has some great style, charme and wit to its design that make up for it; it's most definitely one of the Good Old Games. Shiny at its best!

Who really chooses James??

Of all Games that I recall from my childhood, this is one of the best. A Blend of Gameplay, humour and spectacular voice acting all come together to make this game an absorbing and enjoyable experience. With a strong story and exciting climax, this Game with its mix of loveable and hateable characters will keep you Playing for hours!

great, but

this game is unique and fun, plus it has a nice art style. the story line is.... well dull, i found my self only watching the opening cut scene and then skipping everything else. the game play it self is nice and is a nice concept and it plays out nice, but the main problem with the game is that it is HARD. this is one of the hardest games i have played in a long while. i don't mind a game that's hard but this is ridiculous. i found my self having problems with the second level and i COULD NOT get past the third level as hard as i tried, and i tried allot.The game does have cheat codes but unless you use them allot very early, they can be useless, let me explain. the game is balanced, very balanced, which lets you have no edge over the enemy, which is really bad in a game of strategy. dont get me wrong every troop is good against a type of troop and is weak against a different type of troop, but its hard to remember and the AI, even on the easiest setting, seams to know exactly what to use and when to use it (and maybe its just me but what ever spell set i chose, it seemed like the AI had the perfect counter measure). but other than that i had fun cheating and the game offers allot of different paths. so ya i had fun and was worth $6 if you can get over the difficulty or like hard games
