Sacred 2 is a deeply flawed ARPG. However, it has its own charm, a nice pacing (if you know what you are doing) and a lot of humor. The clichés and unusual combat are just part of its charm.
For me, it will always be remembered as a relaxing game from a time before games took themselves too seriously to try anything different.
I just can't give it 5 starts because it is practically mandatory to play with the Community Patch, and you need to read some wiki articles to understand how character progression works, but if you like to collect loads of loot in a gigantic open-world environment, it is a very nice game to play.
As a disclaimer, I only played the GOG out-of-the-box version. I see people mentioning community patches and mods, which I did not install. My impressions below are solely of the unmodified Sacred 2 Gold that you get upon purchase.
With that said, I dropped the game after about an hour, and even that's because I felt I should give it a chance. The first game was a decent Diablo clone, nothing special but a decent time kill if you've already played through Diablo 1 and 2 a bunch of times and are looking for something different but that also scratches the same itch.
This game, however, only scratches the itch of being something to make fun of for how janky it is. Could just be an issue on my end, but I kept running into weird camera glitches (I fiddled around with the camera settings to try to offset this a bit, but nothing seemed to help get it to feel right).
Apart from the camera issues, I also encountered geometry/collision issues more often than I would care to within an hour of playing. The UI and controls are also somehow even more confusing than in the first game, which was arguably the biggest problem with the original Sacred, so it didn't feel good to play, either.
On one positive note, the music in the game (what little I've had the chance to listen to) was pretty good, and out of the box, the overall sound design and mixing is better than in the first game, where I had to play around with the audio settings for a few minutes to get everything to a comfortable level.
Overall, I don't see myself going back to this to give it another shot. It's pretty cheap and seems to be discounted pretty frequently, so if you have a few coins to spare on it and you already went through your backlog, you can give it a try if you have a lot of patience and are a big fan of Diablo - or more specifically, inferior Diablo clones. I realize there is a community for this game that likes it a lot but I just couldn't see the appeal.
The game is cool but sometimes when i enter areas too fast, the game simply freeze, the voice and music keep working but the main thing won't. Real shame.
After Sacred Gold took so many hours from me, it was refreshing to be back in Sacred 2. I`ve always loved the Sacred universe and the gameplay. Recommended game.
In my opinion Sacred 2 is a great game. The gameplay is decent, the character system is nice and offers space to experiment.
But what really makes the game stand out is its huge, open world. You can move in any direction freely and explore the world the way you want. And you will always find something useful or interesting. There are lots of towns and places scattered around, offering a tremendous amount of quests (around 600 in the main game, around 200 in the addon). What I also like very much is the graphic design. The game is, despite its age, still very nice to look at. It's beautifully designed with many details. In my opinion it looks way better than Diablo 3.
And most important, the game manages to create that certain flow, that makes you wanting to play on and on. Not to forget that the game doesn't take itself too serious, so you'll have to smile from time to time (e.g. the inscriptions on the tombstones).
Unfortunately the game still suffers from lots of bugs. On Windows 7 x64 it doesn't really run stable. I strongly recommend anyone, who wants to play this game, to install the community patch (latest version is 0140). It corrects many bugs an adds some new content as well.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
