A way too repetitive Viking experience

THIS REVIEW IS OF THE SINGLE PLAYER MODE ONLY. So much hype, but it was ultimately a disappointing experience. It seems to be a well-done game - it is a competent slasher (even though it's nowhere near Severance: Blade of Darkness in terms of combat model complexity) mixed with pretty fun platforming sequences and irritating "puzzles" (meaning "use that lever to open the door next to ya" and "look for that secret passage which in other games would lead you to a secret room, but here it lets you move further"). It is technically superb and boasts some quite impressive level designs. The problem is the game is just way too repetitive. All 44 levels are built on the above-mentioned formula, resulting in a tedious gameplay experience. The game just gets boring when you realize it has nothing new to offer and just recycles gameplay ideas and foes. The ending sequence was particularily weak for me (hillarious, too). The single-player campaign is just underwhelming. I need to try out the multi-player component where the game is said to shine (it's one of those games that are still played due to their thriving communities, after all) and perhaps I'll add another star to my rating.

Nice and old-school

This is game is just great. The other game Ican compare it with: blade of darkness^ but this one is less combo - oriented. The worst thing in this game is that it starts very slowly. In the begging is just bunch of boring monsters and swimming, but after that it's just packed with good old hack and slash. Multiplayer is fun too. It's quite repetitive, but can give you few evenings of fun and jumping with axes.

Great Nostalgia Trip Worth Taking

This is strictly relating to single player gameplay! Rune Classic was one I messed with as a kid. Never could beat it as I got jammed up on some level and called it quits. Saw it on GOG for $1.99 and figured, why not? Totally worth it. It’s got some rough spots with a couple of bugs that’ll make you sigh and the AI’s dumber than a sack of hammers. Still, the story’s cool, hacking stuff up feels great, and the puzzles aren’t half bad. Oh, and don’t be stingy with those rune powers. Would strongly suggest to skip the walkthroughs as figuring it out yourself is where it’s at. A 5-star game for me needs a good story, solid action, some brain-teasers, and not too many screw ups. Rune delivers. If you dig old school action games, grab it (at a discount).

Incredibly fun

Fluid controls. Playing through it right now. Storyline solid. Gameplay good. Will update after beating it.
