A fun and challenging modern version of a great arcade shooter.
This was the game I paid the most money for on Steam. I purchased the deluxe version as the artbook and soundtrack aren't sold separately and I wanted them.
The shooter requires memorization and catlike reflexes. It has good visuals and the music is enjoyable enough I wasted to buy it.
There are multiple groups of paths to play and they can be difficult to survive.
I'm an older gamer with a fondness for classic arcade shooters and this fits the bill.
Ive really enjoyed the game so far. I bought the complete version 50% off and I would say it was worth every penny. The visuals are great, levels are fun (hard but fun), plays great on the legion go. Ship variety is fantastic.
The game is a lot of fun, but I think they could do better:
There's a lot of repetitive waiting, and every three lives you have to do a continue cycle. Five or seven lives per continue would be nice, but I don't see a way to configure that.
I feel the series has lost the feeling of power behind the wave cannon. In the very first game, the fully charged cannon felt and was super powerful. The right shot in the right place or with the right timing did devastating damage. You could kill a boss in one or two fully powered blasts, yet the game was balanced/fun in other ways. The cannon feels a bit too much like a normal weapon that you need to fire all the time at the expense of the other force weapons.
Besides that, this game captures the feel of the R-Type games. I haven't played all the levels yet, I'm happy with the level art and design so far.
The game does not save your level progress. Or, at least it doesn't save mine. I've Googled periodically for perhaps a year now, no luck on figuring this out. Nobody out there is talking about it, so I think this could be user error somehow. Still not leaving what ought to be 5 stars because saving level progress, level selecting completed levels, and level selecting the first uncompleted level, should be obvious; not a puzzle. I don't have time for this nonsense. Using latest version at time of this writing, 2.0.3. Uninstalling this because I am not playing level one for the 100th time to see if I can figure out if it's really user error or developer error. It's developer error if it's this difficult to figure out, it's developer error if it isn't possible.
