It keeps the spirit but loses the charm

A lot of the charm in old shooters is in their graphics, art-style and mapping style. Let's face it, modern games have terrible maps and try to immerse you through realism. ROTTv2 at least doesn't take itself seriously and tries to inject some humour. I didn't actually think the maps were bad compared to other modern shooters, maybe this is because the maps don't try to be too realistic, but at the same time most lack those kind of weird secrets and destructible walls or buildings. The enemy AI isn't super smart either, meaning you can sometimes draw enemies into their demise or away from large open areas...except when it comes to any boss battle. ROTTv2 is just an attempt to cash in, a not-so-bad one at that, but it is still nothing compared to an oldschool experience. The game had some optimization patches and now runs a lot better but still is a bit clunky. I didn't really like it.

Fun simple shooting game

This is just some fun dumb shooting, I had fun with it as a mindless shooter game and I think you would too. There were some glitches but if you get it on sale I'm sure you won't mind.

a great classic feeling fps

this game is one of the best fps games i've ever played, it taks the classic rise of the triad and makes it far better graphically and gameplay wise, also adding new levels, and a level editor.

an underrated game

I read some reviews about this game mentioning relentless difficulty, impossible platforms, unfair checkpoints, and performance issues. I’m not exactly sure if these things were fixed in this latest version, but I didn’t see any of those problems. There’s nothing relentless about the difficulty—actually, on easy mode (which I played just to relax) I found it pretty smooth. I also didn’t find any impossible platforms! No issues like that at all! No problems with checkpoints either, since the game has quick save and it works perfectly. The game runs light and flawlessly on my modest machine (4060) with all settings maxed out. It has the same vibe as the original, but many things have been improved, like the graphics (obviously) and they also added a jump button. A varied and fun arsenal that causes plenty of destruction. Personally, the only thing I didn’t like much was the music, but that’s a matter of taste—I just turn it off and put on something else to listen to. I’m an old-school gamer from the 90s and I loved this remake—for it to be perfect, it would only need that transparent map that was common in games from that era. My score is 8.5/10! Truly a great game!

Frustratingly meaningless

Only attempted Singleplayer. (Never played the original.. or whatever) - It looks bland. - It sounds bland. - The mouse controls need to be fixed via config edit to resemble any kind of reasonable. - Using the lunging Melee Attack (Q) is a coinflip on wether or not you actually register a hit on the target. - All the fun weapons go into the same slot (replacing eachother) with very limited ammo, making them quasi powerups instead of playstyle choices. - The enemies are dull and annoying to spot. - There is only one generally useful gun that has infinite ammo and you never have to reload it. - The "Humor" is as subjective as it is terrible. - Has an adorable mission progress "map" though. TL;DR: Frustrating and pointless. Play Shadow Warrior (2013) instead.
