So close to being a gem.. yet so far

This game has many great things: Good destruction, decent vehicular combat, decent shooting, great atmosphere, good plot, good and varied mission ideas for a shooter/ vehicular combat game. It's pure chaos. It's very close to being an actual gem of a game. Then why is this not the case? 1.- The game fails to communicate the player what he has to do. You are required to open small hard to see switches, blow up a certain object, go to a certain place, using certain weapons to destroy something, and it just won't tell you that you are supposed to do that. 2.- Infinite enemies. While you are looking for that hidden switch somewhere the enemies will keep coming. Your health, ammo and vehicle durability's are limited so you will often get frustrated after you were killed many times trying to figure something out and you discover you had to do X in order to keep making progress.

One of the Best games of my Childhood

I used to play through the first mission as a kid, and get stuck on the second, or third mission. After however many years I've finally revisited Redline to beat it. Redline is a wonderful experience from the car combat to the on foot battles. The guns are Unrealesk, and the cars differ from motorbikes to Behemoth tanks. Enemy factions range from big red roid guys to cultists with rail spikes throughout the body. The multiplayer is a great experience from what I remember previously playing the game, but I have not tried multiplayer in the GOG release. I suspect LAN would still work, and I may try LAN and edit this review in the future.

Ahead of it's time!

I'd overlooked this title in the past, thinking nothing of it. Just another '90s FPS, nothing special. Until recently when I saw someone talking about it, and how it was their favourite game. I decided to give it a proper look. What I found was something that appeared to be RAGE if it were made in the '90s. Being a huge fan of RAGE, I decided to just go ahead and grab it. I ignored the warnings of waiting for a discount and the game not running on Windows 10. I downloaded a widescreen patch which you can also use to adjust the FOV. Just don't go over 1920x1080 resolution, the widescreen patch is limited in maximum size. Also, you may need to tweak the FOV a bit, I settled with 0.15. Here's a link to the patch: https://kunnollakeittoa.info/asm/#redline The graphics aren't amazing for the time, but they certainly aren't the worst you will find. The game is however rather buggy, with issues popping up from time to time. Thankfully, levels are relatively short and you can easily restart, but I only ran in to two major issues where I had to restart a level. When you do hear music, it doesn't last for long for but it is very upbeat and heavy hitting , which is nice. Gameplay overall is fun, but it can be rather punishing at times and then piss easy a few minutes later. It varies a fair bit, and sadly there is no difficulty selection. I can't really say anything about multiplayer as I can't manage to get it working ATM. It does look like it'd be a lot of fun though with the ability to fly around with the melee weapon. In the end, this offers more of that RAGE flair which RAGE 2 failed to deliver. It is a rather unpolished experience but if you're a fan of RAGE, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what was achieved here, back in 1999.

A Game Of It's Legitmate Time

Clunky out of place controls. The Menu navigation lagging. the square resolution at max settings. all are reminders at what an old, coming of age game is about. the progress we made towards modern games were piloted by people playing these types of games and making better, more accessible, more understanding games. It's worth buying on sale and taking the time to genuinely try to play and beat. know that if games weren't pioneered in the 80's. They would have never gained as much backing as they do now. This Isn't even the best game of it's time either. But Redline in my opinion is like being a host for a restraunt and earning 3.25 an hour plus tips. Everybody should try it to get a feel for it. The ONLY REAL GRIPE i have, maaan i wish you could strafe in this game. The arrow keys Up and Down are your own moving buttons. i do hate that.

Finally GoG'ed!

Ive waited what seems like forever for this game! I had this when it came out in '99 and its just as good now as it was then.. :D
