Just think Freelancer with capital ships. I was hooked all the way through.

Scratches that itch.
If you're looking for a solid space combat game, this will tide you over for a while. It's stuck in the x-axis, as others have said, but it's not really a huge deal if you ask me. Plenty of ships to choose from, so if you're one of those people that likes starting from a small corvette and working your way towards that awesome dreadnought, you'll have a good time. Combat is simple, but you have plenty of weapon options to choose from. The story is pretty much non-existant though, but I don't personally know too many space sims that have decent stories (although I'm sure there are some.) All in all, if you're itching for a solid space sim and want to blow up enemy ships, this is a solid choice.

Arcadey Space Fun
Very arcade-style space flight sim. You command a ship, shoot guns, kill pirates, upgrade ship, rinse and repeat. Plenty of content to keep you busy. Very fun. Be well and take care.

Fun game with lots of combat
Broadsides seems like an ancient concept, but it is good when gotten used to. Since the 'battle' ships are all on a basic 2-d plane, there's no real issue with motion sickness and not knowing which end is up. Weapons, missiles, and fighters all move in 3-d space. Sure, sometimes physics is a bit simplified, but that is to keep the game a game. This is good fun. And, the music is great too.

3 1/2 stars. Freelancer lite.
The bones of an entertaining game are there. What's missing are enough unique quests/npcs/space stations/equipment. Main story line is very bleh. All the stations feel the same. The half-dozen factions you fight against feel the same. There are a couple weapon types but it didn't add much variety to the combat. The 2D navigation and combat also felt constricting. Maybe I'm overrating Freelancer 1 & 2 from nostalgia but it felt like there was alot more meat to those two games.
