Due to severe overpopulation, the planet Earth’s diameter is increasing with the growth of towering mega-cities, each inhabited by millions of humans. Buildings are growing ever-upwards, interconnected with a thick web of roads, walkways and service channels. In these giant human hives, only the affluent may feel the rays of the sun and breathe the cleaner air. Your team has been selected to go down and investigate problems at the Real Meat factory, in which all of the equipment has started to simultaneously malfunction. Technicians sent to repair the machinery have gone missing without explanation. The UPA's (Urban Protection Agency) orders are clear: prepare for the descent.
Project Eden is a 3D shooter with an emphasis on puzzle-solving. You'll lead a squad consisting of four UPA agents: Carter Dorlan, Andre Herderman, Minoko Molensky, and Amber Torrelson. Each operative has his or her own special ability that you'll need to master in order to progress. As Carter, use your knack for interrogation and nimble fingers to gain information and unlock doors. When you need something fixed and in a hurry, Andre is your man. Computer terminals are no match for Minoko's hacking talents. Last but not least, Amber can traverse hazardous environments with nary a scratch and she'll be your weapons expert. Brave the lowest strata and prepare to go through hell in Project Eden! If you're looking for some gritty cyberpunk-ish storytelling, challenging puzzles, and original gameplay (with optional drop-in, drop-out co-op), this is your game!
Lead 4 specialists in squad-based play into an abyss of vast caverns, snake-like tunnels, and derelict slums filled with cultists, gang-bangers, and mutants.
Morphing enemies will challenge you constantly, mutating as soon as you learn how to destroy them.
Descend into the darkness alone or with up to 3 friends in co-op multiplayer.
I used to go to my friends after school for many months in middle school just to play this game with him and get a little further. Ultra-challenging and mind-bending puzzles make this an absolute classic for me.
The multiplayer is perfect, the cheats are hilarious, and the story and atmosphere is everything I ever want in a video game. With a balance of puzzles and action, great interactive environments and never feeling too big or too small, I've got to put this one in my list of all-time favorites.
Yes, adventure. This game may be labeled as "action" or "third person shooter", but the spirit of this game is the adventure genre, and the challenge is on the puzzles. The action and shooter elements are there and have a constant presence, but they make very little of a challenge and serve more of a relieving purpose. This makes the game very enyojable and varied. The puzzles are fluid and not entirely incoherent and the varied gameplay makes it hard to get tired of it. Overall the gameplay of the game is pretty decent.
The bad part of the game is on the story department. The argument of the game is average and the script is awful, the characters are not developed at all and only one of them gets a little context near the end of the game. Despite all this things, I think this game deserves a chance and can make a very fun experience. It is also of a notable lenght for the kind of game it is.
I wish that I could like Project Eden more than I do. I like all of the individual elements of it. I like the dystopian sci-fi future setting, I like the vaguely British/Oceaniac vibe of it that makes it feel like a Liquid TV cartoon imported from one of those regions, I like the Lost Vikings-inspired gameplay and the idea of progressing deeper into the world through contextual puzzle-solving and uncovering a sinister mystery. When I played the demo in my late teens I always desperately wanted to get my hands on it. It has a pleasing interface and the characters are easy to understand and navigate between.
In execution it's unfortunately repetitive, anemic, and was ultimately a long chore to finish. It also abandons any gravity there might have been in its story and the ending is a stupid one-off joke. I think the developers clearly knew this, and I still admire the hard work they put into the game. It seems to have been a concept and idea ultimately much too large for them to realize that was ultimately shaped into something that only just worked as a full release. I'd like to see it better executed now, but it wouldn't have any of the 2000's charm that ultimately carried me through it.
Still, to my eyes it looks fairly pleasant once you turn off the God-awful texture filtering, and I was ultimately interested enough in its world to see it through to the end, some breaks notwithstanding. Recommended on a sale, particularly if you were a teen or 20-something in the 2000's. Like it or not, it'll definitely come across as being of 'your era' of gaming if that's the case, and I suppose that's worth something these days.
I played this on the PS2, and had a blast with the game. I didn't even know it was released on the PC as well. It's a fairly standard shooter game with some clever puzzles that require you to use each character's abilities to solve.
Although this game is not very well known, I recommend it. It's a very unique game of quality, a rare gem. Sadly I almost forgot about it since I played it years ago as a child, but thanks to GoG I'm looking forward to play it as an adult. It 's a challenging game, if I remember correctly, and I really like those.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
