Not pretty or refined, but man is it fun
Let's get the bad out of the way quickly. It's a bit on the ugly and stiff side graphically. Inventory selection is a 'bucket' system similar-but-inferior-to Half Life, forcing you to remember where a given weapon item is in a clunky single-view list to access it. Missions are uninspired. Humor is puerile at best. Every so often the game has a tendency to glitch out. With that out of the way though, Postal 2 is amusing. It's pure, unadulterated catharsis wrapped up in a trashy shell devoid of class or seriousness. It pokes at you with a dozen trivial annoyances to justify you whipping out some random item you pulled out of a closet and going to town on the nearest victim. The game goes out of its way to make everyone in the town unlikable and unsympathetic. Your wife is a harpy, your coworkers are freaks, your neighbors are jerks, and random people will berate you if you so much as bump shoulders crossing the street. Everyone is presented as an insulting stereotype, but to be fair, -everyone- is a stereotype. No one group is singled out, because everyone's an asshole, including you. They named it Paradise but let's be honest, it's an asocial vision of hell. In most other games all this annoynce would be frustrating, but here? The game allows, no, *encourages* you to act like a vengeful, violent maniac. This is the sort of game which encourages you to pay evil unto petty. Not many games can claim to let your character urinate in a person's face until they vomited, then set them on fire, then beat the flames out with a shovel...while your actions are applauded by both a policeman and a member of the Taliban at the same time. Don't go into this game expecting the refinement or cohesion of Half Life or Saints Row or GTA. That's not really what you're here for. It's incredibly dark, violent, and cynical satire, just like its protagonist, and should be treated as such. Take out all your frustrations in Postal 2 so that you can be a better person than that afterwards.
