Populous™: The Beginning

Unfortunately, this is yet another game that doesn't stand the test of time. There are better RTS with better controls and an overall better experience. Some examples of awkwardness: (1) you can zoom to your shaman with a hotkey but cannot select her with one. (2) In pause mode, you can do hardly anything but scroll, which means that the fast moving troops are almost impossible to click. The AI can cast spells back-to-back and you really don't have a chance to. (3) there doesn't seem to be any auto actions; have an idle villager next to an unbuilt building and you still have to notice and action it. (4) the radius for auto attack is ridiculous; lots of times I have 15 warriors 'guarding' a pass and enemies walk right next to it or attack 2-3 and the rest just stand there. (5) you can't just select idle followers to do something. (6) 800x600 is the max resolution, which is just plain frustrating on a huge screen. (7) there's no auto-save feature so if save at the start of a level, finish the level to unlock the next one, and forget to save you have to repeat the level you saved on. Other, more modern, RTS have solved these issues so I'd recommend sticking to one of those. PS: Other reviewers if you can't play a game, don't rate it 5* sheesh!

It was a great game at its time, so I bought it hoping it will work on Windows 10 64. Unfortunately it crashes, so now I have unplayable oryginal CD, and unplayable GOG version. As I remember the game was worth playing, I loved it many, many years ago. But when I buy something from Good Old Games I expect it will work on newest machines. That is the idea of buying an old game for the second time. I will not search the internet for fixes as I used to do with the oryginal, because I am not paying for a game I already bought to GoG but for the thing that it works. I hope that some day it will be W10 compatibile. For now it was just a waste of money for me, so I have to mark it one/five.

It wont let me play the game. It keeps saying that the program has crashed.

Not working on Windows 8...

I'll break this in to two halfs, first for the game and second for amd gpu issue. I remember play the demo for this back on my dad's Windows 95 PC years ago but never played the full game and it good to be able to go back and play it. The game itself works great, smooth and worth checking out. Nvidia users, don't worry, buy it and go have fun. Amd users, focusing on newer Amd gpu's, go here "https://www.gog.com/forum/populous_series/populous_the_beginning_and_its_expansion_wont_launch/page1" the fix is at the end posted by Mr.Mouse, it's easy to do, but it took me awhile to find, consider this a time saver, it's a limited problem so I didn't let it effect my rating of the game.
