Feels like an episode of The X-Files

Phantasmagoria 2 is a horror FMV game and stand-alone sequel to Phantasmagoria. This game feels like an episode of The X-Files, being set in a 90s office building with a big cast of unique characters. Once again, this game covered controversial topics of its time such as bondage and homosexuality. You play as Curtis Craig, a man in his 20s who works in the office for a pharmaceutical company. You follow his every day life, from waking up in the morning to going to bed in the evening, and get to meet his co-workers and bosses. One day a co-worker is found murdered and all eyes are suddenly on Curtis. This game is, compared to its predecessor, a full FMV game. This also means that the game has aged much better, as all the environments are not rendered in 3D. The soundtrack is well-made, fitting the contemporary science fiction/fringe theme that is going on in this game. All the characters feels like tropes from a 90s drama series, and that's nothing negative - they are all unique, with their own personalities and drawbacks. The acting is most of the time really good and it feels like with some tweaking, this could have been a TV episode or a movie. Overall I really enjoyed this game a lot and I don't understand why people seem to dislike it over the first Phantasmagoria, seeing that this is clearly the better title. Definitely recommending it for all FMV fans out there!

Lots of fun!

I see many people saying that it's unintentional campiness is the reason the game is so good. But I've always seen the campiness as intentional. I've played this game when it was released and never felt it was meant to be taken seriously. That's the biggest reason I liked this one better than the first. Anyway, it doesn't have a lot of gameplay elements, it's basically an interactive movie with a bunch of adventure-style puzzles. So, if that's what you're looking for and you like cheesy horror (with a sci-fi edge), buy it! HOWEVER! This is one of the few times that the version on GOG.com is terrible. And granted, it runs fine through DOSbox, but the game was originally also optimized to run on Windows 9x. This is the version I've always played and looks much better (no scanlines, higher color depth). Unfortunately, the GOG.com version excludes this optimized Windows port. I understand the DOS version is much easier to run on a modern PC (thanks to DOSbox), but they could have included the Windows port, so we have to option to mess with it. I've bought this in the hope it would run on a modern OS, but was disappointed to see only the DOS version available. If you can find the original CD's, there are patches to fix some stuff, but none of them make it viable in modern Windows. Your best bet is to run Windows 98 inside a virtual machine or have an actual Windows 98 machine. It might be a lot of hassle, but man, is it worth it!

Movie or game?

This is more like a psychological thriller flick with some sci-fi thrown in; than a computer game. There are few computer game-type puzzles, mainly going from location to location and exhausting coversations to death. Unlike some reviewers, I feel the acting was OK (as good as anything that currently comes out of Hollywood). The story line was interesting and got one quessing in a who-dunnit fashion. The game designer produces some weird situations (OK Curtis can't leave without his wallet, but a snack bar and his rat to get it??) The puzzles at the end (SPOILER AHEAD) seem a bit silly and only vaguely relate to what Curtis is doing: combining aliens and glop and slime?, and the circuit board puzzle was weird. But overall I enjoyed.

Well, here it is!

The dull, hammy FMV adventure game that became an internet phenomenon. It's got silly acting, a dull script with even duller puzzles and a plot with so many nonsensical holes it basically defies any and all semblance of logic. And you know what? It's hilarious. Seriously, make it an MST3K night, get some friends together, load it up and poke fun at it all the while... ....PHANTASMAGORIA!!!!

A masterpiece

I played this game when I was a kid in 1993 or 1995 and it made a huge impression on me. At that time, the graphics, gore and language were like no other in a game! Now it seems horrible, but both Phantasmagoria games were a mark in the game industry back then.
