Mediocre Pillars of Eternity or Tyranny
This game is essentially a mediocre Pillars of Eternity or Tyranny; it's not super-bad, but there are too many issues to call it good. There are a bunch of UI issues which make the game frustrating. Why are spells grouped by level? I am forever looking for my spells because I can't remember if it's a 3rd or 4th level one. And why are those icons so darn tiny? The way the whole "autopause" works is annoying (Baldur's Gate already perfected this), the damage indicators are so noisy it's hard to see which character is being effective, the pathfinding is horrible and can make you lose battles as characters walk in weird directions, loading areas and/or saving a game takes too long and happens too frequently to not be disruptive, especially when you're doing all those silly quests, etc. etc. The story is so-so; it's pretty standard and fairly bland. Too many quests remind me of World of Warcraft: "fetch this, bring it to that, etc". There's this "kingdom management" thing which is mostly just boring clicking through an awkward UI. This random guy comes to your throne room but doesn't want to tell what about, so you travel to his village and he says he wants to get an emerald necklace to woo some lady. Why do I need to travel all this way, couldn't he tell me in the throne room? Now I need to travel to the town, then to another town to get the necklace, travel back, and have 1 or 2 random encounters in the travelling. All in all a lot of boring legwork interspersed with many 20-second load/save cycles. Also, get your own damn necklace, why ask your Baron? There is a lack of humour as well; it all takes itself as Very Serious Business™ which only adds to the blandness. I don't care so much about the ruleset mechanics as such, but in general I found it all pretty confusing (again, UI issues) especially at the start. It's not a very hard game though; and didn't struggle too much (normal difficulty). All in all: "it's okay, I guess, if you like cRPGs".
