Almost perfect single player shot-em up

Super quick review: if you like single player games, download and play this game now. The "IF" underlines the major gripe I have about this game, there is no cooperative mode. A bit more details. This game is a six degree of freedom shooter in a zero-G environment. Robot operators went rogue and killed most of the human workers in each base, your mission is to rescue the survivors, blow the evil robots and run with your life. Your tools: a small, but advanced and extremely versatile warship, and your wits. And meanwhile, possibly discover what happened. To guide your ship, even the classic Mouse + Keyboard control settings works well, but the game allows a lot of configurability including two joysticks and VR sets. The enemies are all robots, but they have different weaponary and personality. During the game you will learn the best way to defeat each, but the first time you meet them often it will be a surprise. The story is told via audio logs and via messages of your ship AI. The story builds up really well, but it is not invasive. If you are playing a difficult section for the tenth time (or you are not interested) you won't be forced to skip (or worse see) cutscenes all over again; you will just have this audio log in the background. The graphic looks gorgeous, the sounds do their job, and the music is really well done. About negative sides. I write those for sake of completeness, the game is great and the good point greatly overshadow those negative sides. There is no coop multiplayer. The levels seem a bit static, outside enemies basically only the doors move. The story is great and builds up well, but still perhaps a bit more hints of what is going on would be nice; you learn the significant details only at the very end of the game. The game is a bit on the easy side, you probably want to play Insane. The voice acting is fine, but sometime it seems a bit too clean; it seems that everyone recoded their message in a isolated sound booths, not in factories.

DESCENT IS BACK!!!!!

Seriously the best game I've played in a very long time. Descent and Descent 2 being the first two favorites. From the teaser to the EA I felt flashbacks to the old games and when I saw FROM THE CREATORS OF DESCENT.... I instantly was like....WHAT!? THEY ARE BACK!? If you enjoy Descent 1 2 and 3, get overload dont even bother doing the teaser because it is worth every penny.

Fun but a bit short

Enjoyed this a lot. It's a nice shooter throwback to Descent. It's great fun, if you liked the arcade shooting of Descent. Unfortunately, it's pretty short, and the last section of the game is very dissimilar to the first section (and much less fun). There are about half of the levels of the original Descent.

Good controls vs. mediocre level design

I had to pause after every completed level and picked the game up again month later. The controls are tight and the combat mechanics are well executed, but the level design is repetetive and the huge levels got me bored again. Also the difficulty is ramped up by unfun mechanics: - Scripted doors that close behind you - Scripted enemies enter rooms from secret doors behind you - Spawning machines that rebuild infinite masses of enemy robots - Installations with invulnerability fields - Spawners are hidden in places where every corridor looks the same - Sustained hits spin your ship, so you loose orientation (Good luck reorienting, because the whole place looks the same upside down.) - Timers Does that sound fun to you? Check the GOG and steam achievements. Very high drop out rate. Just about 15 % made it through the first levels. For most people it wasn't a fun experience. Even though the reviews are often stellar, only dedicated fans completed the game. I read, the devs ran out of money in 2019. I can understand why. The controls in this game are good, but the story and level design is meh. And even though a lot of people were waiting for a successor to "Descent", "Overload" feels stale. I can see this as a good training exercise for spatial perception and reaction in multiplayer. But for single player, this is just a mediocre experience that probably does not merit your time.

Absolutely amazing!

This is one of the best first-person shooters/space/flight combat sims I've ever played. It is rock solid and has so many nice features. Too many to list for a short review. It's just a very well-polished game graphically, challenging, UI, story, and playability-wise. The community is fantastic on the official Discord and has developed mods, custom maps, and a completely re-designed multiplayer, exceeding prior expectations. However ... this is not a critique of the game, but GOG. I had to go to the Steam store to find the manual.
