Great Game, Compromised Port
Outpost 2 is a fantastic game that's never been properly replicated in the medium. Some come close, some may even be better, but Outpost is singular. That said, this version is deeply flawed. As a few other reviews reference, there are deeply frustrating resolution issues that lead to all kinds of problems with seemingly no way to fix them (resolution not being particularly modifiable back in the day). What I've been experiencing is a cascade of individual minor annoyances that have, on several occasions, led to me losing at least a half hour of progress. First, the resolution problems, which wreak all kind of havoc. The game isn't big enough to fill my screen and surrounded by a big black box. Individually, a surmountable issue. The game is locked to fullscreen mode, but it doesn't lock your mouse to the bounds of the program. So if you accidentally pan too hard, you'll find yourself clicking on your second monitor, interacting with a completely different program, and automatically minimizing Outpost 2. Due to the aforementioned resolution issues, the game gets somewhat cranky about this happening and it takes a good minute to get the game to pop back up on your screen. Most of the time, this continues to only be a minor issue, but one time in ten, the game will just crash outright, or it will occur in a critical moment and by the time you finally get the program to show again, you have lost. Cascade of minor errors. I lose 30-50 minutes if I didn't think to save religiously. I write this in frustration after the fourth such time this has happened. It's still easier to play it here than anywhere else, but even on GOG, it's a deeply compromised experience.
