Not scary at all, just irritating

The most overrated horror game I ever played. From "hide and seek" subgenre, even Clock Tower (1993, SNES game) was much, much scarier than Outlast - random, trial and error running simulator with stupid Quake II-looking enemies. Better go to the basement with your camera, it is more frightening and for free. If this is how modern horror game looks like, please take me back to 90s/2000s when Silent Hill (1-3), Fatal Frame (1-4), Forbidden Siren (1-2) appeared and were appreciated - it's not nostalgia, some of them I finished recently for the first time. If you want to play FPP horror, take any Frictional Games title like Amnesia, SOMA or Penumbra, Condemned is also not bad. From 2019 Resident Evil 2 Remake is pretty good. Outlast is maybe scary for children and people who never play any good horror videogame (no, Dead Space and F.E.A.R are not horror games - they're just action shooters).

Really good

Loved this game, played on the sofa with my girlfriend and it was a pretty unique experience. Yeah, it goes full speed on jump scares, but... they'll freak you out, no matter what. The DLC is worth buying, it may be a little repetitive compared to the main game, but if bought on a sale, it's worth it. Also, it's story interesects nicely with the main game and you get to know what happens AFTER the main story. If you like first person horror games, just buy it.

Simple concept, scary game

The scariest game I've yet played. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to experience terror in the dark. This game is exhilarating and tense throughout, rarely giving you a breather before sending you off into another dark corridor with some demented variant. It's not a perfect game, by far. The level design is very plain and linear, and it has annoying design features like no toggle button for crouch, not placing notes and documents at the top of your notebook list, etc. More significantly, the game does not allow for any creativity in how you evade monsters. There's really only one way to do so in a given monster chase, so you either do it, or not. The player cannot really experiment with different hiding options beyond those provided in the game (beds and lockers). The game is still fun, I just wish that the hiding feature, the main point of the game, was more open-ended. Nonetheless, these shortfalls do not compromise the game's central motif. There are few things scarier than pushing around in the dark, looking through a grainy camcorder, in a fantastically freakish haunted asylum. The textures and atmosphere are so good; it's clear how much effort the team put into creating a compelling mood and immersive sound selection. The mnusic is chilling, the voice acting is strong, and this game will have you sweaing bullets. Play it in the dark, play it with headphones, and most of all, don't read walkthroughs. Just let the game's surprises come to you. Visually arresting, Outlast is definitely an essential addition to the great titles of PC horror lore.

A little bit overhyped

Hmm, my first real horror game and...I was not that impressed really. The scripted scare jumps did get to me at times, but the story was just confusing and thus it was difficult for me to be immersed. I suppose if you play the game a second time it will make more sense, but don't think it hides the truth that the story is a bit incoherent and mostly presented by random gibberish and weird scribbled notes. Neither was the overall scariness that high, I feel that even simple action games with horror elements gave me more goosebumps than this ever did. However, this is probably a subjective thing as I can see other reviewers think this is so different because you have to hide and can't fight, but since everything is so scripted the fear quickly dies when you know every single scare jump after being dead several times. Have to say, I played on the second highest level, so I died a lot which also made the game a bit repetitive at times. But yeah, it is an okay horror game. Just don't expect to be overwhelmed or surprised as the hype has been a bit strong.

Klasyk?

Klasykiem może bym tego nie nazwał, ale na miano must-play już zasługuje. Outlast zawiera fabułę i klimat, która powinna każdemu graczowi zostawić pamiątkę w pamięci. Postacie w grze są bardzo dobrze wykreowane, w większości przypadków bałem się ich. Grze jedynie mogę zarzucić "skryptowość", którą dało się przewidzieć w niektórych momentach. Grę polecam 4.5/5
