A solid, scary horror game.
A good horror game. Some flaws, but I enjoyed it and am glad I played it. Solid atmosphere for a stock "asylum gone wrong" setting. In addition to all the unmoving corpses and wackos trying to kill you, there are plenty of living but nonhostile inmates in the asylum. The game feels very alive; more like a real place where people are coping with something terrible and less like a game board with nothing but enemy pieces. In general, I felt immersed in the protagonist and his hellish journey, but there was a big disappointment at the beginning. Within the first five minutes of snooping, the reporter is stymied by a locked door, so decides to start crawling through air vents. This was a harsh blow to my investment in the character as a real person - who crawls through air vents? Surprisingly, Outlast is at its weakest when dangerous enemies are stalking you, although it does a good job at making you feel helpless, like a horror game should. If you are spotted, a chase happens, and either you are killed, or you manage to outrun the guy and hide under a bed or in a locker until he gives up, which feels artificial. Neither outcome is fun, but in my case it drove me to try harder to never be spotted. Similarly, since I found the hide-and-seek sequences not that enjoyable, I began as a player to fear them, which made the majority of the game very tense in a good way. When I wasn't in immediate danger, I constantly worried about when the next danger would appear. The pacing was terrific. The game is mercifully short. The entire time, I felt very driven to escape the asylum; I wanted it to be over. Dragging my fascinated aversion out over a dozen or more hours would have been a mistake. As it was, it felt just right. I was worried that there would be chintzy 'boss fights', but there aren't. Resolutions are nicely cinematic and sometimes surprising. Last but not least: you have feet. This is a wonderful thing in a first-person game nowadays.
