Awful Game, Fun Nostalgia
Make no mistake, this isn't a good video game. The AI is half assed, easily exploitable with many ways to make encounters a complete breeze even on the hardest difficulty. This is the primary aspect that made Outlast "scary" and yet any and all tension is lost when you discover how easy it is to break the AI. The jumpscares become repetitive which only lead to more annoyance and frustration rather than making feel frightened. Trager's sequence is the only time there is some fun to be had because of the way he talks and for how sort it is. Atmosphere and overall art direction is fun but when the mechanics are barebones, topped with bad AI programming and repetitive jumpscares, I find the game to be just out right bad. However, I won't ignore the nostalgic value the game has given the hype surrounding it back in 2013 and as such, its a nice time capsule to a much more simpler time for not just games, but life in general although the praise it got was overblown. I did recommend picking it up ONLY if you were someone who grew up watching it on YouTube or if you are curious about it.

Nice, but inconsistent (Spoiler-free)
Overrall thought: It begins with a nice atmosphere build and nice scares, gets repetitive by the middle, and goes totally bonkers by the end. Story: Pretty interesting, but many of is written on documents, that most players ignore. And -in my opinion- you can predict the ending miles before it arrives. Game Mechanics: You use your camera to see in the dark (it requires batteries for this), solve extremely simple 'puzzles', and runaway and hide from enemies. It's fun an gets your heart racing, but it gets repetitive at the middle of the game, and as a side note, bateries are way too abundant. Graphics/Sound: It uses the Unreal Engine 3, it looks very detailed, but the character models could have been better. The sound is amazing, and very chilling. So, like I said, you'll have a nice and creepy time playing Outlast, but its inconsistencies show themselves throughout the game, and might take you out of the experience.

Scary...to some point
I just finished "Outlast" and could say that it's a good game and I recommend it to every survival horror fans. Narrow corridors, tense atmosphere and it's a game I would like to play again after some time. I liked the style to use night vision mode of a camera to survive in the dark and I recommend to play it on "Nightmare" difficulty as it's more tense and adds a drama into it. Graphics are on a good level and also level design is ok. Lightning is also very well done. What I did not like so much is that after some time you can learn the behavior of your enemies after some time and you can predict some of their moves, but that is neat picky as there are some good variations of enemies throughout the game. Story is weaker, but it's something I never heard of before, so at least this compensates a bit. Also a "hide & seek" game is sometimes very awkward as for an example when you hide behind the open door and crouching in the corner, the enemies have some kind of invisible "circle" around them which makes them sensitive to your presence and behaves like they can see you right next to them...forgetting the object between you and enemy and catch you, even when they didn't know you are there. I was also more scared form a game "Alien: Isolation" --> Behavior of the Alien was mostly unpredictable and sound was more accurate about creature whereabouts. "Outlast" miss this a lot. Now my personnel disadvantage is that "Outlast" focuses mainly on jump scares. I prefer thick and tense atmosphere of the story with ambient music OR sounds without music at all in background. As I mentioned, try "Alien: Isolation" - For it's awesome Alien AI and ambient sounds in the background, "Dead Space" - For it's story, "The Suffering" - Highly recommended! Tense and thick atmosphere, brilliant and original story, "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" - Atmosphere, originality, etc... All-in-all this is a good game for more playthroughs and I recommend it. _>>EnJoY<<_

Great game with average ending
This game stands out as being something truly special: it creates an athmosphere that is truly frightening. From the moment I entered the courtyard and got out from the car, I knew that I had something special in front of me. The feeling is perfect: being not able to fight your way and having only the option to run and avoid the enemies, you feel helpless; and having to constantly manage the battery level, only increases the tension (here I fondly remember the flashlight from Doom 3). The graphics are nice, the sound is awesome (you can easily hear your breathing how it changes depending on the circumstances), the movement is smooth and the story is decent. I consider the game to be pegged in reality, until the end. I didn't like the ending: whereas everything until the end was pretty "normal" and doable, we get the supernatural thing as a game-end explanation. I don't get it: why couldn't they keep the line with the asylum, crazy doctors, maybe a little conspiracy? Do we need a new invisible enemy walking through walls and flying like Superman? This is not a good ending: this is lazy story telling, period. I like to abide to this rule: if it ain't broken, don't fix it. And let me not forget that the new super invincible and invisible enemy had my fears disappear: the scare factor was lost, gone was the authentic horror feeling, only the tension to run away from this "thing" remained. Quite a difference between the game (until this point) and the ending. It is my personal opinion that had it stayed in the realm of earth, it would've been a perfect horror game. Even with the weak ending, it is worth the full price.
