Interesting concept, mediocre execution

MINOR SPOILERS INCLUDED. As a rule I don't play adventure games more than once, because commonly there's little point... and click (:D): when you know the answers to puzzles, there's no challenge, the story is generally the same and so on. Few of these games present the world wonderfully enough to inspire "another go", at least at first ("Machinarium" comes to mind), but even if I really like the game itself, I rarely return to titles in this genre. "Noctropolis" is a weird mix: on one hand it has TREMENDOUS potential (especially during today's hype for superhero fiction): the intro shows your avatar reading old "Darksheer" comics, setting the mood and characters of the story that's about to unfold. The premise is simple - you're sucked into the world of the comic (think "Toonstruck"), Noctropolis and become the new Darksheer when the original protector of the city decides to retire. An unusual concept for an adventure game (which are commonly less dynamic), so if you like superhero genre, you're probably sold. In the meantime a mysterious figure gathers a group of supervillains to terrorize the city and, by all accounts, your mission will be to stop them... and this is where the good, first impression takes a devestating blow. Quite honestly, there isn't really a set goal for the whole adventure - sure, bad guys are loose but you're never directly told that you have to stop them and, in fact, when the game ends many of these villains are STILL on the loose. Add to it that, for a substitute hero, you don't really defeat any of the villains you encounter (with one, clear exception) and the whole premise of the game being a superhero genre is practically tossed out the window. The game DOESN'T wrap its own story (and its ending is rather disapointing too). The puzzles are rarely hard and, quite often, they're just so painfully simple that you don't feel like you really achieved anything by completing them nor the game itself. The background graphics are good and set the tone of the story well, but story itself is very lacking with little "cause and effect" mechanics actually implemented; a feeling that the game is just a bunch of episodes tied together by characters only is not unusual for "Noctropolis". Yes, there is nudity in the game - literally a single scene of it by my recollection and the fact that, throughout the game, you run into two females designed to be sexy (Stilleto and Succubus), one of which will be your sidekick for most of the game. All of this is sad because most of the villains had potential to be very interesting and I wouldn't mind seeing a superhero who defeats enemies with his wit and brains rather than brawns. Sadly most characters are not elaborated on at all and, as I mentioned, you don't really get to defeat the villains. It's fun to experience "Noctropolis" for the sake of the atmosphere, but frankly I think watching a playthrough video will suffice for that - adventure game fans will probably be dissatisfied with rather easy riddles and the story just isn't solid enough to care the game. I'm sorry; I really wish I could claim "Noctropolis" to be a great game, but I just don't think that it is.

Aggressively Mediocre, Yet Charming

Noctropolis is a point-and-click adventure with an intriguing premise. Our protagonist ends up in a comics book world he loves, and he has to take the mantle of its previous (now retired) super-hero, Darksheer. The game features 2 actual in-game comics near the beginning, giving you a taste of the over the top setting of this world. Sadly, that's the peak of the game. Those are the only two comics you'll see (so no clever meta-narrative, nor eye-candy). The most heroic-feeling part of the adventure is accomplished when the protagonist is still a regular human, and once he turns super-hero, we'll rarely ever use his power or get acknowledged as a caped hero, and we'll deal with a LOT of run-of-the-mill puzzles for an adventure. It's not all doom and gloom: the visual style of the game is great (even if the mix of 2D and live-action characters and cutscenes feels unusual, they make it work), the soundtrack has some fine tunes, the world seems to have an interesting story to it, and the villains have interesting designs/gimmicks... But they never amount to much. You face multiple of them, but very often the conclusion is incredibly weak, and you don't feel like you did much. Characters you'd expect to be important disappear, the lore of the world never gets explored (you get two info-dumps), some of the puzzles grow finnicky, where actions you tried before lead to different outcomes later on. The controls are a bit stiff. You right-click to show your verbs, and the selection is akward: goto, move (an object), get, open, talk, use (inventory item). The plot also ends with a whimper, and character development between the protagonist and his sidekick is basically absent. You go through tedious tasks for minor items/progress, and it just feels wrong when you are playing a super-hero. The idea has a spark of imagination to it, and it barely manages to carry the game to the finish line once the game has no thrust left. Hard to recommend, however.

one from my childhood wishlist

I've first seen this game in one of my favorite computer game magazines, and I fell for the images. fantastic graphical design, but real actors, in a great mixture. sadly, I had to wait for almost 30 years to play this game...... and man, it was good!!! if you get used to the little bit odd controls, this game can bring you into a comic book world, which totally deserves a playthrough. must mention the great soundtrack...

Not the best, but can be entertaining

Reviewing from memory, not GOG's edition. This game never quite clicked with me. Either it felt like it was trying too hard, or I didn't like what it was trying to do. But some will enjoy it a lot. It's a straightforward attempt at a superhero point-and-click adventure from a time when superhero games were rare. The setting is fairly grim and serious, drawing on the dark gothic imagery of Tim Burton's Batman and the tone of Sam Raimi's Darkman. Sprawling backgrounds and unusual angles abound. Fatalities are frequent, whether punishing your mistakes or rewarding your success over a villain. There's a very brief topless scene that adds nothing to the game. The story progression is pretty linear, but that suits the episodic nature of the plot. The puzzles can be tricky on top of the usual pixel hunting. To its credit, the game delivers a consistent experience, so if you like the first couple sections, you should enjoy the whole thing. The game is also full of live-action video clips that pop up during ordinary gameplay as well as cutscenes. They're campy and full of wooden acting, but somehow they match the rest of the game's presentation enough to be entertaining. Although the game is no masterpiece, it manages to tell a complete story in its own little comic noir universe. It's different enough to stand apart from its inspirations. If you think the setting looks interesting and don't mind campy acting or pixel hunting, go ahead and pick it up.

It was fun

Look, it wasn't perfect.. but it was a decent game for it's time. I remember there being nudity, you can get your 'partner' to show you her breasts at one point, if you do the right things..... It's a find-the-pixel game in many respects, but it has a good story, and it's fun to explore that world. Worth the on-sale price!!
