Gets better with every (free) update

Not a game for the action crowd. This is normally a slow, self paced game. It's a survival, exploration and base building game. If you're looking for FPS or space combat there are other games that do that better, although it does have some combat if you want it for variety. It is truly open world(s). With the most recent updates from "Next" to "Beyond" (at time fo writing) there are plenty of things to do. Downsides : can seem repetitive, but I know no game that is not to some extent. Depends on your frame of mind when playing. Galaxies are huge but there are essentially just a handful of planet types - albeit with different challenges combined with the planet types, like storms, seas. Story kinds hinders experienced users as you have to do part of the story to get certain technologies. Survival never becomes a non-issue, but it does become a minor issue as you gain technologies and inventory space. Grind subtantially reduced - the developers listened, but still some - there has to be some, unless you try "creative" mode. Pros : Own a fleet of personal starships you can fly, a car, motorbike, hover car, truck and evem a submarine ! Seemless (but not graphically perfect) movement from space to land to sea. You can mine, farm, hunt, just explore or base build multiple bases. Note : one review complained about inventory shuffling. This is part of the game initialy but you can expand your inventory slots as you progress. It's a non-issue, IMO. A lot of enjoyment unless you are absolutely combat focused.

Worth the wait

I've finally bought No Man's Sky and, honestly, I love it. First off, it's the graphics are STUNNING. Beyond that, it runs surprisingly smoothly! I've experienced minimal bugs and the biggest complaint I have in the technical department is the fact that alt-tabbing out of the game disconnects the cursor from it when I return to the game window. The controls took a little getting used to and some customization, but overall they're very tight and responsive. The sound design is pretty good, though certain SFX are kind of grating and I've noticed some little balancing issues. Again, I can live with that. To be quite honest, this is a game you can play with the sound off and still be totally immersed. I've never been much of an economics buff so the depth they've put into the in-game economy system is actually pretty impressive. I adore the language-learning system and the NPC interactions overall. I wasn't expecting them to be as RPG-like as they are! Of course the interaction scripts are procedurally assigned, but they're so well crafted that even the limited interactions the player has with NPCs gives them a little spark of character I was pleasantly surprised by. The game is a bit weak story-wise, but has less of a focus on factions and plot and more a focus on meta existentialism, which is quite refreshing. I love the philosophy of it. The biggest problem I had was the fact that the player is just thrown into the world without much of a tutorial. I died about five minutes in while I was still figuring out the controls. I'd recommend starting in creative mode to get a feel for how it works before attempting survival. TL;DR - it's a very good game, imo. It had a rough start, but the devs owned up to it and poured a lot of time and effort into making this the game they promised. That's rare. And yeah, NMS is still very Minecraft In Space, but Minecraft is the bestselling game of all time for a reason. People love to explore and create. No Man's Sky was worth the wait.

Actually a really great game now

Like the title says, after four years of completely free updates the game really is great now. It has grown so much since release and Hello Games added a shitload of new features (and still bring really big updates) and cut sown on the grind by giving you a bigger inventory etc. at the start of the game. In my 30 hours ive played now the game hasnt crashed on my machine once. It stutters from time to time for a couple of seconds, but i guess its from the old HDD its installed on. If you are looking for a really laid back experience with many hours to put into one game. Look no further than no mans sky. As some of the other people here already mentioned: This game is not for everybody but if you like laid back games and the sound of the content they added. Try it. Its on sale nearly as often as Witcher 3 and was definitely worth the 30 Euros i paid for it.

Amazing - their bad start was long ago.

Their team has released at least two full-size DLCs per year, since launch, and all for free as auto-updates to the base game. NMS might now be the best deal for your money on Gog.

Hello Games needs to go back to basics.

I can't recommend NMS even with all the free updates and patches adding all new bells and whistles because there is a fundamental issue with the core gameplay. I've now started and abandoned playing NMS four times since the 2016 release, sometimes sinking 10s of hours into the game per pickup session, and every time I leave with a feeling of emptiness and disappointment. The main issues are that there is no sense of progression, no challenges to overcome and thus no reason to keep exploring this vast but extremely uniform universe. In my opinion, it feels like every single system in this game is half-baked, fleshed out to the point where it becomes just tedious enough and then abandoned for the next new shiny thing. I think Hello Games should really go back to square one and restructure the basic gameplay instead of focusing on adding new content. There is potential here, but I feel a lot of it is wasted. It's like putting a fresh coat of paint on a rusted interior. Eventually the fresh paint flakes off, exposing the rust underneath. You need to fix the rust first before you add fresh paint. For me, the sense of progression lasts for 10 minutes. Once you've finished fixing your ship and take off into space, that pretty much ends any sense of progression in the game. You've pretty much unlocked everything in the game! You can go anywhere now. Nothing else really unlocks anything new, just side show distractions or a new way to do the exact same thing as before. The game boasts 18 quintillion planets, but I would heavily argue that there are really just 6 planets, with 2.x quintillion variations of those 6 themes. The sameness of every planet in the galaxy makes exploration pointless. You will find nothing truly unique in the game. All the behaviors of all the animals and plants are the same everywhere. There are only 3 sentient races everywhere in the universe. Essentially everywhere you go is the same. And that is why, for me, the game's draw ends after 10 minutes.
