I like sea games.
You will have a choice of several types of fishing boats, there are original RPG elements and team management, mini-adventures, in pleasant graphics and with a fresh soundtrack and an original concept.
Maybe too short, but someone cared here and it shows everywhere.
Thank you PS and ES. I enjoyed it.
Nantucket is a great little game set in an unusual time. You play as Ishmael from Melville's classic Moby Dick, and set out to hire a crew to take down the white whale.
The game has you starting out in a small ship with a small, inexperienced crew, and little money. The goal is to find where the whaling lanes are, hunt them, and sell their meat and blubber for money. You use the money to upgrade your ship, and gain experience hunting whales to upgrade your and your crew's skills. There are also minor quests, like transporting cargo to a different city or scouting out rumors of whale locations, that provide money and experience. There are distinct side quests as well, that tell a story and provide unique items that will provide bonuses to your crew.
In addition to the above, there is the main quest that requires you to investigate what happened to the crew of your old ship as you search for Moby Dick's location. It will take you from Australia to England in search of clues.
Overall, it's an enjoyable game with only a few negatives. The first is that there is no recommended level for the side and main quests. You can get a quest that is unbeatable for your current level, with no way of knowing beforehand. It's not a big deal if you just reload a previous save, but if you're playing in iron man mode your save is deleted upon dying.
The combat is alright, going a little too much into RNG instead of skill, or maybe I'm no good at it. It seemed like the best way to win was go all attack and leave the other classes at home. Your character can multi-class, so you can swap on the fly if you need healing instead of attack, but your crew don't have that ability.
The positives (atmosphere, music, artistry, and overall gameplay) definitely outweigh the negatives, and this game is a solid buy.
I like this game. A lot.
It`s a peaceful (sometimes) almost thoughtful game of whaling men out to get their fortune in whales, with you as the Captain. Whaling is a damn dangerous job and men can be seriously injured or killed. Not only that, but you have to make decisiona onboard that may affect the morale\life of your crew. For me looking after your crew is the most enjoyable.
The fighting when it happens is usually when you find a whaling spot and must get the whale. It then turns into a turn-based card game where you pick the best men for the job and make the best choice you can. It`s a bit confusing at first since sometimes none of you can act, depending on conditions and simply have to bare the brunt of a whale attack until next turn.
Also don`t forget to actually choose whalers when you pick your crew, first time I just picked all cabin boys and was wondering why nobody was fighting!
You get singing from the crew too which is real nice and appears to be historically authentic. I like to adjust the volunes just right so the sloshing of the waves mixes with the singing. The Devs wisely used sound effects to good effect since visually you don`t really see that much! Artwork is good olde-fashioned type art that reflects those days.
Good game.
Nantucket is a small computer game with good graphics, good albeit too recurrent sounds, great historicity and some rather meagre story. The appearance is board-game style. Yet while there is a board game called Nantucket about Ahabish whaling, this digital Nantucket has nothing to do with it. Since I am restricted here, the pros and cons for the ~ 10-hour playthrough:
Pros:
+ good, consistent graphics (if you like the style)
+ good sound (including shanty choirs and a theme song)
+ nice historical facts in newspaper headlines
+ controls are okay, even though they could be more intuitive first
+ relatively stable, only a bit buggy, see below
Cons:
- repetitive design
- lack of options; very unbalanced game elements such as safe docks (which do not provide a benefit)
- too little use of »random« factors (i.e., all harbours have their clear set of prices, have the same sailors in their bars, the ships available are always the same, and so forth. A bit more surprising elements would have been nice)
- bug:
- (1) not only is basically all booty bugged, often producing negative values, or cargo size is calculated completely wrong (do NOT make the mistake and calculate yourself, you will be disappointed by the horrific mistakes by the game),
- (2) but sometimes the quest line just disappears until you accidentally hit a storyline spot, then it returns all of a sudden.
- (3) Enemy encounters close to the map's edge tend to break the game.
- (4) Getting into the menu from combat is an impossible or time-consuming thing to do. Tip: set combat speed to fast.
A good, lightweight game by a small crew with a good background. I do not see a big strategy or even biz simulation aspects, it is far too shallow; replayability is not a key feature. There seem to be no easter eggs, and »visit[ing] cities« is NOT one of its features. I would have liked less card and dice elements, they make the game mechanics look cheap. A missed opportunity. Still good.
Spent so much time just waiting for research and sailing back and forth around cape horn doing nothing in particular. A lot of crew compositions are non-viable, and it's very possible to make the player character completely useless if levelled wrong. Pirate combat is dissapointingly useless.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
