The game has a decent story that feels very old-timey-folklore. The game has a scary atmosphere without being oppressive and utterly hopeless. There's some light item scarcity which means you're not going to run around fearless because nothing is unlimited (that said, I never ran out of anything). You do some backtracking, but you've got a little car that makes it a breeze (no gas to worry about either).
It's not the best game I've ever played or anything, but I feel like it's exactly what it was setting out to be. 10/10
I really enjoyed Mundaun.
It's a very well done adventure game that has more gameplay than a walking sim, so I wouldn't classify it as one.
The visual style is awesome. I found the drawn, sepia look very unique and it really grabbed my attention.
The characters, location, story, sound and music are all excellent. The gameplay mostly consists of exploring (which is rewarded as you can increase your health, rifle handling and courage/sanity). There are obstacles and puzzles to overcome. And lastly, some combat. Ignore the previous review by the person complaining about combat for their WHOLE review. This is not a shooter game. I used the pitchfork one time, and that resulted in a sneak attack bonus surprisingly. You'll mostly be avoiding and running from enemies. However there are ways to defend yourself and I saw no issue.
My only issues with the game: Sometimes you can't select items in your inventory with the mouse. It happened quite often with items on the left side. I found cylcing through them with the direction keys worked though.
Lastly, I had to use a walkthrough once because I did something that then resulted in a scripted event not occuring. It was quite annoying as I always avoid walkthroughs when I can. My non spoiler hint if this happens to you: look at your inventory and try to interact/look at all of your items.
I didn't find the game scary. There is a really good jump scare though. Overall- It's a really well done and an original game.
100% worth full price and IMO a must buy on sale. I logged just over 7hrs which includes me trying to not use said walkthrough.
Lets start with the negatives, most will blame its gameplay as lacklustre. I would reframe it as just competent. It does what it needs to do without being great. My biggest gripe is finding the right spot to take or leave goods in the kitchen. The more gamey aspects like upgrading your abilities do not change much or present interresting gameplay opportunities, but it does not get in the way either. Another thing that I did not really adhere to, is the black & white graphics. This is a personal gripe, I have fairly bad vision, and understanding what was happening on screen was sometimes difficult for me. Now for the positives. Well, the art style also, when the image is clear it is mostly beautifull. Sound design is simply masterfull, probably the best artistic & technical aspect of the game. The athmosphere of the game is amazing as well, the story is a classic in its genre but well made. To sum it up, this game gave me flashbacks of Death strandiung and Eleusis, good references in my book but I understand if you are not that interrested in the story, the gameplay solely will not keep you entertained the whole way through. For me, when taking into account the (probable) low budget, they definitely made the best game out of it. This is a masterpiece in my book.
I love the game's suspense and horror. The objectives are clear but still give the player a challenge for finding out the solutions. Great style of graphics and UI. I love the diegetic notebook. Story had me hooked to the end.
Largely made by a single person, Mundaun is a incredibly expressive and interesting horror game. Almost all the game's textures were hand drawn then scanned into the game, giving it a rugged, hazy look. The story is grounded with a clear plot driving you forward but there's also a lot of folk-horror-isms (like speaking to a goat's severed head), which when paired with the visuals makes the game very dream-like. The sound design is also great, much more realistic which I think plays off the visuals and atmosphere nicely.
There are some rough edges here and there (particularly with enemy AI at times) but in no way did that ruined or even dampened the experience for me.
Also, took me about 5 and a half hours to beat which I think is great length. At no point did I feel like the game was dragging along or that there was much pointless busywork to pad out the runtime.
Overall I highly reccomend it for anyone who likes strange and unique horror, this is definitely a game that needs more recognition.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
