Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Disclaimer: Although I have been playing the Mortal Kombat series since I was 11 years old, I never 'got good' at them, at least not good enouhg to play competitively. Thus, take this review as the perspective of a long time fan with more enthusiasm for the story and lore than the game itself. That being said, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is far and away the most accessible of the classic 2D MK games. With options for controlling the difficukty of the fights, as well as the ability to activate your character's Dial-A-Kombo with a single well-timed button press, even someone like me, who has never been good at the games even after 32 years, can get to the end credits and see the outcome of the third and final tournament. (And that's not even getting into the hidden cheats menu!) Roster-wise, this was the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate of Mortal Kombat: EVERYONE was here. Characters who had died, characters who were locked out of competing in the final battle, even characters who had been irreovcably altered over the course of the series, you could play anyone from the first three games. Even past versions of certain characters, all brought up to the gameplay standards of Ultimate MK3, which Trilogy is technically the expanded edition of. No one was left out, and that alone made Trilogy a dream game for fans. Not every character is created equal, however. A roster this size is tough to balance, but certain secret characters, making their playable debut here, were given extremely broken special moves or ridiculiusly long combos that made it a handicap to pick anyone else. However, if you can look past the cheese factor of certain characters and the absurd difficulty spike of the final two bosses in any ladder, this game is a violent, campy, over-the-top joy to experience. And thanks to GOG, the original version's absurd load times are a thing of the past! I recommend MK Trilogy to any fan of retro fighting games with a strong stomach for gore. It's a piece of gaming history.

MKT on the PC runs in close parity to the PSX version and is compatible with the fan patch. Of course, that's if you can get it to start. New system with Win 11 and newer AMD hardware and I can't get the exe for the Windows edition to even try and start the game, so expect some leg work to get it to run on newer systems. Maybe the game will be rereleased this year with the Legacy collection, but nothing has been announced. One would figure if they are going to re-release MKA, they'd do some port of MKT

I picked this one up for nostalgia I suppose. I used to play MK in the arcade and ruin folks. I do remember playing this on PS1 and enjoying it. I may have had much lower standards back then though regarding CPU opponent AI. Even on very easy it does that reaction to every move you do AI. As in, it knows the button presses and the reactions to those button presses. I seem to remember combatting this by just using Robot Smoke all the time with the jump back, kick, and then teleport punch which always made the CPU AI respond with a projectile. This version is the same AI. Even on very easy it's just not fun to play the "story mode" of the game due to the AI. It actually just destroys the game which was a disfunction of this generation of fighting games. I will say though that GOG has done an excellent job of making the game accessible. Controller support worked perfectly for may. Game ran as it should. It's just too bad the single player mode is so bad in regards to AI. This is probably great if you have a room full of old buddies looking to play each other but beyond that this game is a no go.

Finally, a legit copy of this game is available once more for sale. On my win10 it would not even launch, but my new PC (Win11Pro) is able to play it. You absolutely must mess the settings before launching the game and get it clear and not blurred. After some testing, I finally got it to be pixel perfect with perfect clarity...looks amazing when the pixels are clear without any blur at all... I did read that many had it working on Win10 so it may have just been my win10 PC that had the issue. BTW, yes, this version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy has Chameleon. :)

i couldnt believe this was on sale here, the minute i saw it was on my cart immediately , I played it on my ROG ally and it played good .no regrets
