You take on the role of an aphid grub and guide him through several stages of metamorphosis, as he journeys for his spawning ground deep within the insect microcosm. Discover hidden secrets as you journey deeper and deeper into the game world.
Winner of the Association of Illustrators Award, Morphopolis features 100% hand-drawn art and animation. Its soundtrack was composed by well-known British composer Thom Robson with the aim of captivating and immersing the player as he or she takes their time to solve puzzles and enjoy the organic world of Morphopolis.

This game is absolutely stunning; with no doubt, the art is top notch.
And now the bad news. It is about an hour long, and it would be fifteen minutes long or less if your character moved at a typical speed. Gameplay consists of clicking on the screen. When you locate an interactive object, your bug will SLLOOWWWLY move towards it. The interactions do not have logic behind them for the most part, so it's just a matter of clicking on everything to see if anything happens. Short games are fine, but I found the tedium far outweighed the loveliness of the atmosphere. It is very cheap, so it may be worth a look for the sake of the art.
NOTE: I have not played the GOG version of the game. I have the Steam version.
This is one of those games that would be more accurately defined as an experience, rather than a game. This game is very similar to games such as Samorost, only much shorter. The art style is excellent, and the gameplay is actually quite imaginative, but also very simplistic. It was well worth the small price I paid.
The art is lovely and there are some nice puzzles here but the gameplay is poor. Why can't my bug just walk to where I click rather than having to hold the button? Why does it move so slowly? Some tasks I found by accident clicking what I thought was the background. Some tasks require my bug to be in exactly the right position but this is not obvious. One task appears to do nothing when it is completed.
I don't feel that I wasted my time or money but I was left unsatisfied by the experience.
It looks pretty but I found the controls and my first experience to be frustrating. For example, it seemed to be telling me to click on something, but really it meant to drag it; I tried that, and it moved, but it never reached the trigger point, just kept telling me to do the same thing. Turns out you have to click on a particular part of the insect for it to work. Then it took me to some flower puzzle with no way to quit out of it or quit the game - I had to use Task Manager to kill it. I buy hidden object type games for my mother, but this would just frustrate her. Still, it is cheap, so worth a try, and I admit that I gave up quickly.
Morphopolis is a vibrant piece of art, teeming with colour and shapes. However whilst the visual appeal is high, it lacks somewhat in the gameplay department.
Morphoplis has a kaleidoscopic and vibrant colour palette that is quite overwhelming. It portrays a robust and vibrant world teeming with life.
Small animations quiver on the screen, the peristaltic movements lending themselves thematically to the process of metamorphosis that the game portrays.
The artistic direction is definitely the height of this game and the detail in every scene is astounding.
However the game does fall lat when it comes to the gameplay. It feels more as if the game has been developed for a touch screen. Whilst in most cases this is not a problem, there are a few interactions which require dragging motions and the game has a tendency to process the mouse interaction as a click rather than a drag.
The game is also relatively slow, animations can drag out for a few seconds... which whilst seeming of short duration it can be frustrating if you've already determined the next action or object to be found and are waiting for the beetle to crawl across the screen. This mechanic, whilst making sense narratively, is frustrating when compared to normal Point 'n Click or Hidden Object games.
In addition the game includes a mini-puzzle on each level, further adding variety to the gameplay to make sure it doesn't become monotonous... even despite the short duration of the game.
It's artistic and meditative, and sometimes frustrating slow but if artistic games are your cup of tea. Morphopolis is well worth a try, however be prepared to be frustrated at some of the more anoying interaction sequences.
