better than the first 2 Metro games

I played the entire Metro trilogy recently and this one is just a bit better than the previous 2 games. PROs: - 3 large area maps with opportunities to explore them better - you get a compass that will always point to Your current objective, so You still won't get lost - a bit of an improvement upon the obscure morality system of the previous 2 games (You no longer need to be touching guitars, or listening to the entire length of some background NPCs talk to each other) - finally a save system, the previous 2 games were lacking this CONs: - the objectives of the morality system are still hidden, so if You want to get the good ending and don't want to follow guides with spoilers, just don't kill anyone (including random enemies shooting at You, stealth all the way), that in itself can be very tricky since the only non-lethal option You have are melee takedowns - the player character is still completely unable to talk, never says a word and all NPCs just talk to him, there is no way to react (this is just some artistic decision that rubbed me the wrong way, especially when NPCs ask You for a response like begging You to respond with the radio You carry and that works perfectly fine)

An action blockbuster from the east

The Metro franchise is an impressive series of action survival FPS that has gone from the janky charm of Metro 2033 to the vastly more polished Metro Last Light and now Metro Exodus, essentially a AAA release (if that label still means anything) that will make beefy gaming rigs sweat when RTX is applied and everything cranked up to max. It is a visually impressive game with great lightning effects and the sound effects are equally good - squeezing off a round in the open without a supressor attached and you will hear the echo of your gunshots with the chilling realization that you have notified every foe around about your presence. Like previous games, the adventure starts off in the subway tunnels of the ruins of Moscow but this time around Artyom and his comrades actually make an attempt to escape the radioactive wastelands of the former capital city and seek greener pastures through different parts and cities of Russia. Without spoiling too much of the story I can at least say that you will get a lot more variation when it comes to enviroments compared to previous games. ME also focuses a lot more on freedom of navigation with each section of the game essentially being an open mini map where you can explore different parts either on foot, by boat or with the use of a makeshift car. I can't say that I personally found that the open world-esqe design gave additional gameplay value just like I didn't care much for the focus on configuring your arsenal to suit your playstyle (where a revolver can be modded into a sniper rifle as an example) - it gives you flexibility at the expense of personality. As in previous games Artyom faces both human foes and various monsters that forces you to adjust your tactics to win. The game includes a rather crude morality system that, besides including some minor side missions to make your NPC team mates happy, encourages you to adopt stealth and non lethal tactics against other humans with the latter meaning that you instead of fire fights sneak up behind foes and knock them out. This gives you the same problem as the Dishonored games: you avoid much of the fun gameplay (shooting) in order to improve your karma and the reward is happier team mates and a more cheerful ending cinematic. Sacrificing fun gameplay to avoid feeling like a mean person is of course an interesting dilemma but it doesn't make the game feel more fun. I should also point out that even on "hardcore" (hard) difficulty, the game rarely becomes challenging and despite the promise of scarce resources, you will be overloaded with ammunition, gadgets and resources for most of your playtime. All in all, I liked Metro Exodus and was compelled to see Artyom's story arc being brought to an end but I would've liked a bit more challenge and a different approach to the karma system.

2 problems

Love the immersiveness of the Metro games, and this one continues with the great atmosphere and storytelling. However, gunplay is a struggle. I was playing on controller, and had to switch to my mouse to aim long distance shots decently. Aim assist is a mix of nessassary (with some waterbased enemies) to annoying... since it doesn't always snap on target. It's manageable but as someone who enjoys snipers I was disappointed that I never wanted to in this game. Additionally, the nightvision scopes in this game are too bright to be useful in most situations. I had my monitor setting on default, so I dunno if darkening brightness would have helped, but I shouldn't have to adjust my settings because they didn't manage the scope brightness properly. I felt like it was easiest to use lazer sites and hipfire for easier accuracy. Even with the struggles of combat it's still functional, and doable without too much struggle. My other issue with the game... pacing with dialogue. I love the immersiveness, and being able to take moments outside of the story to listen to the other characters, and their dialogue reveals and tells a lot about them and the world. However, (similar to past Metro games) there's this pacing issue where there are pauses between segments of dialogue/monologue, and that makes it take a lot longer to listen to everything a person has to say. It's not a big deal for me, but there were moments in the story where I felt I had to go somewhere semi-urgently, but I'm sitting listening to someone for a long time. I think the game is great, but for people looking for issues before buying, these are the two that stood out to me. They're not a big deal, but something to be aware of.

They were so close!

(This review is based on the enhanced edition of the game) The story etc., has been talked about a lot, so I'll just stick with the games' mechanics, features and performance. :::Performance/Graphics I had heard that the game ran poorly. It must have been worked on a lot since release because I was very surprised at how well this runs. (My specs) CPU: Ryzen 7 4800H GPU: RTX 2060 Mobile 6GB RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz OS: Windows 10 Installed on an M.2 SSD. Game settings: Quality: High Vsync: Off Motion blur: Normal Ray Tracing: High DLSS: Quality VRS: 2X Hairworks: On I get 70 - 90fps. Even turning Ray Tracing to Ultra and VRS to 4X still results in 55 - 60fps. The graphics are superb. From eerie corners to sun washed landscapes. The sound design pairs with this well to make the game feel really immersive. :::Bugs There are still quite a lot of these... I've fallen through the map on one or two occasions, the stealth kills/KOs haven't worked sometimes. Not frequent enough to ruin it though. :::Combat A strength of the game. Stealth is viable in almost all situations, including non-fatal KOs. There are ample rewards for scouting an area before deciding how to approach it. Sometimes an area can be cleared by finding a good spot and taking out enemies from a distance. Guns blazing is also viable. :::Items/Gear Another strength. There are a host of weapons, but more importantly there are a great number of modifications that can completely change how a weapon works. Repairing/upgrading is an important part of the game. You can also find very useful tools (such as NV goggles) if you look in the right places. :::AI The AI is hit or miss. Sometimes they'll be difficult and behave in a way that makes sense. Sometimes they won't. Stealth can sometimes be unsatisfying because of "OK you definitely should have seen me!" moments where you know you messed up but it goes unpunished. Overall, the game has a few shortcomings but I respect the ambition. An excellent attempt.

NOT AS GOOD AS PEOPLE SAY

I have put a lot of hours into this game and I have really loved some moments and utterly despised others. I am a huge fan of the series but this one is a real swing and a miss. Ranger Hardcore in this is fun in the open world and linear shooting gallery sections but completely falls apart during boss fights and arenas. The AI is atrocious when fighting human enemies and this is especially egregious on RHC. The mutants' AI and animation is clunky and the overuse of zombies is really disappointing. It is worth pointing out that several game breaking bugs still have not been fixed which will really ruin your day on RHC (no manual saves). Expect to get trapped in geometry or get stuck when a scripted NPC trigger doesn't trigger. This can lose you A LOT of progress and is honestly rage inducing. The Two Colonels DLC is fantastic but Sam's Story is hot garbage, way too many zombies and a really, really terrible boss monster and story. I have tried to love this game, I have put 90 hours in! I simply cannot recommend it if you loved the first two, it is not the same kind of vibe. I haven't even mentioned the atrocious script, story and voice acting (trust me, it is badly done in more than just one language). It is often on sale for really cheap though so give it a shot but temper your expectations. It is not like OG STALKER or any of the cool modded versions. It feels like a budget title from the early 00ies that is imitating its influences and wearing a shiny coat of paint. This review is nearly as long and meandering as one of the many, many unskippable expositions scenes in the game. Nearly. I will say in its defense that it looks fantastic, sounds great (when the NPCS aren't yapping) and runs very nicely even on lower end hardware.
