OK, but nothing more.
After playing through the three S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-games, this game was a slight improvement, but it also had its share of things that annoyed me, just not as much as in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-games. The positive: + The graphics looks good to me. + I did not have a single crash during my two playthroughs. The negative: - FAR to linear. A couple of my favorite games are Doom 3 and Dead Space I and II. Those are relatively linear. But in this game you are literally walking through tunnels/tubes a lot of the time, and if you are not walking through tunnels/tubes you are often just a passenger on a ride with little or no possibility to influence what happens. Same thing that I disliked with Borderlands. - Not possible to skip cut scenes. - Not possible to manually save. So if you are struggling with a part of the game, you are doomed to play through the same part time and time after time after... And possibly watch the same cut scenes with no possibility to skip. - You often have an NPC following you around, guiding you and virtually holding you hand, almost as a personal assistant. Except for that in this case the assistant seemingly randomly may or may not help you. When you do not need help, the assistant might help you, but when you need help and/or hints the assistant may not help you. - At times you suddenly and without warning had to tap "E" to survive. Something I have hated at least since I played the "Resident Evil"-games! But at least tapping "E" was consistent and did not change... - During the game there are death traps that you can fall into if you are not careful and watch where you are walking/running simultaneously as you are fighting enemies. At the end the game turns from a action game into a game where you have to jump precisely or fall and die, and quick tap "E" or die. - Froze for a period a few times during playthroughs. At the same time the game seemed to continue in the background, so this could have caused me to die (but luckily did not).

Surprisingly good
I knew about Metro for years before I bought it, and waited several years after that to finally play it. I was a little worried with how much it looked like euro-jank in the videos I had seen about it, and the extreme-linearity was almost a deal-breaker for me. Today I finally sat down and started it on survival mode. ~8 hours later I finished the game in two sessions and loved almost every second of it. I played on the lowest difficulty, normal. The game was a complete breeze on normal. It was so easy that I accidentally saved 1000 military grade bullets (the equivalent of Fallout's bottlecaps). Despite that, I would caution against playing on a higher difficulty on a first playthrough. There were a couple turret and wave-onslaught sections where I got completely overwhelmed by enemies and had to just memorize their spawns and pray in order to progress to the next checkpoint. Additionally, I ran out of gasmask filters exactly once. There is a portion late in the game where you need to activate a life support sytem in order to breathe freely and progress to the next checkpoint. I ran out of filters the moment I started the activation sequence, and I had an awesome moment where my character was sputtering and wheezing while desperately trying to activate the sytem in order to save his life. It added so much suspense to the scene that wasn't meant to be there, and become one of my favorite moments in the game. I had spent the entire game to that point unsure if I was managing my filters correctly, and all of that tension released at once. I worry that it might be common to get soft-locked on higher diffuclties by not having any filters and being unable to find more before the character dies. I'm not sure what happens if the game puts you in a respawn loop, and judging from the other reviews you are forced to manually restart the chapter from the main menu. With that said, Metro 2033 is definitely worth the asking price, and is a no-brainer on-sale.

No Linux installers available
I absolutely loved the grim atmosphere the game presented. The lack of ammunition really gives you a sense of survival in a post apocalyptic world. Story is quite basic but the characters are really good. 4 stars because native linux installer isn't available

Yikes!
There is no mistake - this is a good game. However, it's also been made difficult by the severe lack of useful information presented to the player (especially at the start of the game). This may or may not be a bad thing, depending on your perspective, but I would have preferred if at least the base mechanics were explained a bit more. It wasn't until I read about 5 or 6 community guides that I actually got how to properly play the game. For example, navigating the levels was somewhat challenging for me because there is no map and the path to take isn't always so clear-cut. It was only later that I can take out the journal and use the compass to find the general direction (towards north). "Filters" and "MGRs" are other crucial aspects of the game where it leaves the player hanging. To the game's credit though, once I got over the initial hurdles, I was presented with a pretty deep and engaging story. The diary notes were especially useful in giving additional context to some of the story elements and the characters were pretty well-rounded.The gameplay was also quite fun and engaging. I even had quite a few jump scares on several occasions. I definitely recommend this game, but I also encourage reading a couple of community guides on some of the gameplay mechanics first. NOTE: The game randomly crashes for me. Quite a few people have reported similar issues (on the GOG Forum, Steam Community, PCGW and even Reddit). Although it's still quite playable, since it autosaves pretty frequently, I'll be deducting one star for that.
