Some good, some bad
Played on Linux using Bottles. The game functioned great. I have read the Metro books, and since I really liked 2033 and 2035, I was excited to play the game, but it's a mixed bag, and very loosely follows the book. On one hand, the game looks and sounds great. No complaints there, I loved the visuals. On the other hand, the game is often frustratingly linear (well, it's a metro tunnel, so that tracks I guess) and not very engaging. Early game especially felt like just walking from one cutscene to another, occasionally pressing the E button. At times it feels like the game was designed by someone who doesn't really understand what games and gameplay actually are. Encountering a quick-time-event where you have to press or smash E to not die is not a fulfilling game mechanic, it's silly busywork. Button smashing in general annoys me to no end. The most egregious for me was sitting in a turret and getting the prompt "Press E to sound horn." where the game would not proceed until I pressed E. It was so unnecessary. Difficulty is somewhat uneven and all over the place, but in general I found it acceptable. Some enemy waves were a bit too cramped though. Now, while the game railroads you along, there's a good number of secrets to find and spotting them was fun. I also felt the stealth sections, some of which are optional, worked fine. For a completionist who enjoys this game, there's plenty to bite in to. I personally will not play this game again, nor will I play the sequels. I'm sure some people will love this series, but it's not my jam.
