MASSIVE CHALICE is a tactical strategy game set on an epic timeline from Double Fine Productions. As the Immortal Ruler of the Nation, you'll take command of its heroes, forge marriages to strengthen your Bloodlines, and battle a mysterious enemy known as the Cadence in a war lasting hundreds of years.
Bloodline Genetics - MASSIVE CHALICE features an innovative Bloodline system that allows the player to marry heroes together to produce children. The Bloodline system uses a randomized genetic code for every hero. Their children can end up with the best (or worst!) gameplay-impacting traits of their parents.
Permadeath - The heroes in MASSIVE CHALICE age over the course of the timeline and eventually pass away. This forces the player to engage in the beauty of permadeath and always juggle an imperfect party of heroes with which to do battle!
Bloodline Relics - If a hero has fought valiantly enough when they inevitably pass away, their weapon has a chance to become a Bloodline Relic. This powerful Relic can be passed down to any character of the same house in order to carry on the legacy of the fallen hero!
Long View Strategy - Because the war lasts 300 years, players need to take a long view of their strategy. Decisions have to be made dozens of years in advance and long-term planning is incredibly important. That 3-year-old toddler is going to grow up to be your most reliable melee fighter sooner than you think!

Yup! This is awesome! It lacks the nice stuff from X-com and other similar games but this is a fuun game you should play with. The concept is very similar!
This 'game' is a series of 'maps' where you have to clear 'enemies'. Again, again and again. Pointless and boring.
Graphics is one of the week points - broken lines, geometric squares and triangles make it look rough and untidy.
Brilliant game, rare when something comes along with a new game design concept like this one does.
The combat was immensely entertaining, the meta game of bloodlines a blast and connects the strategic with the tactical, loved the aesthetics of the game design, and the aging mechanism of the heroes while bothersome because you quickly lose them also worked to make losing them either from old age or in battle more palatable because it’s just a part of the game design so you just roll with it.
Good test for me on how much I loved a game is I’m ready to jump immediately back in and do it again even though in the first run I suffered not one, not even two, but more like 3 total team wipes, along with losing all but about 3 pieces of the island before the 300 years was up, it was touch and go whether I’d even field 5 heroes in the final engagement. Through it all since I was having such a good time I would just pressed on after a complete wipe and that’s impressive game design when that happens.

Disclaimer: I have not played the release version of the game yet, just the early access versions.
You are an immortal ruler created to defend a country from the encroaching cloud of corruption known as "The Cadence." Battles are turn-based and occur on tactical maps that vary by region.
Heroes: 9 classes total, with only 3 available at first. Genetics determine each hero's appearance and traits. Heroes gain XP in battle, but they can also die in battle or be subject to age attacks. You can risk them in battle or instead have them settle down and have children. Heroes can gain nicknames by defeating many enemies, and they also leave behind Relics (powerful weapons) when they die which can be passed on to other members of their house. All the houses have a backer-designed family shield, motto, and battle cry. It is easy to grow attached to a line of heroes. You can view the entire family tree and reminice outside of battle.
Buildings: Keeps hold a ruler and a consort who train children who will be your future heroes. Crucibles house a single hero who trains all the country's children for additional XP. Sagewright Guilds house some number of retired heroes who research technologies.
Tech: You can research items, new weapons, better armor, overall kingdom improvements, and you can recruit random new heroes and adopt babies.
Enemies: There are a few families of enemies based around themes of time, such as Overgrowth, Corruption, and Aging, with eventual advanced versions.
Difficulty: Yes. If you make too many wrong moves, you are doomed though you may not fail the game entirely for a long time afterwards. Battle requires a lot of thought.
Art: The 3D art is top notch. The cut-scenes were a little janky, but they may have improved in the final version. The sounds and music of this game are awesome. I especially liked the badlands maps, with all the cricket noises in the background.
4.5 stars. Less a half for a poor tutorial.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
