MAINFRAME DEFENDERS - tactical retrofuturistic strategy game. A computer virus has infiltrated the Stargazer research complex. Most of the robotic units are controlled by the virus. Lead a squad of 4 prototypes on a mission to defend complex mainframe. You'll have to repel assaults, destroy unit fabricators, download valuable data, clear infected nodes, and do more on your way to the deepest parts of the complex. Work with item limitations and drawbacks to build powerful combinations. Destroy your enemies with diverse tactics: overheat them, melt with corrosion, absorb damage, and return fire. But don't rely on a single strategy too much - enemies might have a way to counter it. But above everything else: defend the Mainframe!
RETRO STYLE: Graphics, inspired by 80s terminal PC with hybrid synthwave soundtrack.
DIVERSE TACTICS: Cook enemy robots to death, bury them under your bullets, eliminate with a single powerful shot, or render your opponents useless with debuffs - this game is designed with a lot of viable strategies in mind.
BUILD YOUR SQUAD: Similar to how in card games you have to build your deck, in Mainframe Defenders you have to combine different items with unique abilities, to create an unstoppable squad. Work with item drawbacks or double down on them, creating flawed, yet powerful build!
UNIQUE ENEMIES: Enemy squad won't sit idle, though. Each unit has its own role in the squad and designed to counter certain strategies. Pick your targets wisely, or you will lose.
PROCEDURAL LEVELS: Hand-made rooms are combined with procedural generation to create random levels. Missions have differing objectives, combined with unique mission conditions. Will you accept the challenge or avoid the unknown and risk falling behind?
PROGRESSION SYSTEM: Victory or defeat, the game is not over yet! Unlock new units, each with a unique set of upgrades and load-outs. Unlock new items to bolster your new strategies.

The game is simple. It plays pretty quick. But it is done so well. You can really tell the people who made it like to play video games. Hope to see more from them soon!
Squad tactics roguelike.
Simple rules but the really well done AI and balancing result in a challenging but not frustrating enjoyment.
The map generation and weapons and attachments looting make the game a lot of replayable.
Mainframe Defenders manages to be challenging and casual at the same time - by the virtue of simplicity.
You've got four bots You can choose, those can be upgraded and equipped. You choose missions based on the reward, the mission type and relative difficulty. There's no epic story, no eye candy, no base building, no events between missions: just well balanced turn based tactics.
It is a Roguelite. Maps are randomly generated and also differ based on mission type, but the style remains consistent in its simplicity. Destroyed bots can be repaired at a cost IF You finish the mission, else it is Game Over. Afterwards You can still unlock more of the ~190 items and 12x2 bots - which can indeed help beat the game. 5/5 "Very Hard" difficulty (with Upgradable Enemies) is not to be trifled with ;)
The premise is super simple: You select 4 units to make up your squad, and see how many missions you're able to clear before you're sent back to the main menu via squad wipe or completion of the final fight.
The music is nice and the retro look, while it's stylish at first, can quickly become a detriment to the readability. Thankfully, the dev included a bunch of options to reduce or disable these effects.
Now, the game has unlockables, and while they do spice up the rate at which you kill or die, it's pretty much always the same: Some units have weaknesses to certain attacks, just like you do. The issue is that the enemy variety is super tiny, and what really changes are the equipment combos they can use against you. More than damage and other stats, your main concern while choosing what to use will be heat generation.
So, once you understand the meta, the gameplay gets repetitive as you mindlessly continue clearing levels, getting trivially incremental upgrades to your equipment. The complete lack in variety of visuals also hinders the experience... It's close to just being ASCII art to let you "imagine the stuff yourself".
That being said, Mainframe Defenders is a nice time-killer that doesn't cheat nor tries to do anything crazy. It's just, a very simple, cost-effective, and fun experience as long as you set your expectations in the right place. You might not spend weeks playing this game, but it sure does generate a strange itch every once in a while that only this game can scratch.
Not flawless, as the missions are a bit repetitive, but there's very few games where the balance is as carefully thought as this one. There are many equips to choose from, and almost everything can be comboed to a great effect (unless it's resisted), but it's 4 choices always (4 robots with 4 slots each + 4 team equip). The freedom this gives is great, while keeping the game simple to play.
Totally worth the price.
