They can do better than this!

You can see the devs had a vision and wanted to create something huge. But they miscalculated and failed at the core gameplay mechanics. There is not much to do outside of missions. The open world is meaningless - I think a semi linear world suits the mafia series much better. After all this is how this series started. In Mafia III you get to do too much of the same things over and over again. Worst part is that what you get to do is not much fun. Guns have no impact and side missions have no variety. You even visit the same places multiple times and sometimes it doesnt even make any sense. I'd say over 50% of the actual gameplay is unnecessary grindy work. Which should've been cut out. Apart from that you get to enjoy a fabolous soundtrack, a great character design with so much depth and detail, superb voice acting and a really good story. I love the cutscenes they are my favorite! The graphics are nice, the game has its unique vibes. If you don't mind the grind (and there is a lot of boring grind) get it for the story and the atmosphere.

I give it 5 stars. It was a long and good ride. Sure you can always have more. But considering the discounted price, good graphics, driving and shoot outs it did the trick for me. Making side quests priorities and playing story contents here and there will keep the game balance. I think some people went straight for story content than was forced to do side quest before more story content would unlock. I never had a moment where there was not a story content available so it got hooked through the end. After reading some positive review and negative ones I sided up with the positive ones and I do not regret the experience. Make sure to get you cars hooked up and you will enjoy your drives. That's it.

Bigger is not always better

I finally beat it and let me tell you, I wish this game was shorter, there are some technical issues too, but the most offensive is the sound design, many times I could hear people like if they were next to me even if they were 30 meters away. Also, skip the race missions, the driving controls are garbage (driving with a keyboard always is), I tried using a gamepad and it didn't help, whoever decided to put the acelerator on R2 and break on L2 buttons should be fired, there's nothing wrong with the classic cross-square-circle holy trinity for driving Also also, I encountered some bugs that forced me to close and reboot the game, because of course, I had at least 8 CTD, that's a new record for a Mafia game, otherwise it runs smoothly at 60 fps Don't get me wrong, the fact I finished the game means that it has enough good moments to keep you going, but god damn, I'm glad it is over

Could have been great...

Brilliant presentation, characters worthy of rooting for/against, good story, good premise for the game, good shooting and driving mechanics, but ultimately let down by mind numbing repetition. I think it could have actually been trimmed down to half its length and been a substantially better game for it. The game is at its best for the first hour or so, up until you actually take over your first section of town. At that point, its all the same from there and no amount of presentation or story can spruce that up. Some promising elements such as assigning your lieutenants and watching their loyalty grow or shrink end up not being fleshed out very well. Technical and artistic masterpiece but unfortunately not a very enjoyable game. In the beginning it was like a good movie, in the end I sort of didnt care anymore. I finished it just for the sake of completion.
