More frustraiting than I remember

Machinarium is a really lovely game with really nice artstyle, great music and an interesting setting, very reminiscent of Stanisław Lem's short stories. The plot of the game is simple, but it's not anything it doesn't need to be. The characters are pretty compelling despite not having any dialogue: the good guys are likeable, the bad guys are easy to dislike. On that front, everything works fine. When it comes to the actual gameplay, however, things aren't quite as peachy. While it is expected that a point-and-click adventure game will have some challenging puzzles, Machinarium goes overboard a few times - there are a couple of puzzles that are just too difficult, and the mini-game of Connect 5 will have you pulling your hair in frustration. Which is a shame, because some more balancing would do Machinarium a lot of good. Still, it is a good adventure game I can recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre (and especially those who also enjoy Stanisław Lem's works). At the same time, however, I'd recommend waiting for a sale because the level of frustration doesn't justify the full price.

An Absolutely Astonishing Masterpiece.

The ambiance, art, mood, and creative imagination of Machinarium are unparalleled. It takes you on a journey of steampunk, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic romance & rescue in a dystopian world, yet at the same time has the simplicity of two youngsters who are fond of each other dealing with bullies at school and ultimately getting reunited. Aside from the art, the soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece of its own, it fills every frame of the game with a deeply woven tale of charming, rebellious innocence that has to hang on in the face of adversity in a cruel world, and that, against all odds, love always wins. And yet, it is all presented with a humorous, clunky, almost muppet-like tone. The graphical style of Machinarium bolsters the aforementioned effects. It is visually extremely pleasing to the eye, almost like a series of animated paintings telling you the tale of a young robot in search for his beloved, in a steampunk dystopian world mostly dominated by machines. At its core, Machinarium is a point-and-click adventure puzzle game and it does what it does at its finest. This is not a game that artificially ramps up the difficulty and punishes you for failure. It is a game solely focused on puzzle solving. It is so cleverly designed so as you're never stuck in a loop and there's always a way out of every puzzle. In-game walkthroughs for each level are available to access, but you gotta earn that walkthrough by completing a small minigame, to discourage the player from always resorting to the walkthroughs, albeit doing it in an entertaining way and not punishing the player should they want to seek guidance. This is a beautiful, brilliant masterpiece with a lot of replay value and packs a lot more emotional and sensational weight than you would expect. 10/10.

Przygody w świecie z metalu

Machinarium to pierwsza pełnowymiarowa gra czeskiego studia Amanita Design, która miała premierę wraz z końcem 2009 roku. Jest to gra przygodowa typu wskaż i kliknij, której akcja dzieje się w fantastycznym świecie. Gracz na swojej drodze zmuszony jest zbierać różnorakie przedmioty, napotyka wiele zagadek środowiskowych czy mini-gier oraz niemało postaci. Protagonista trafia na wysypisko śmieci, które stara się opuścić i wrócić do miasta, tytułowego Machinarium. Świat wokół niego wypełniony jest metalowymi budynkami, metalowymi przedmiotami oraz metalowymi śmieciami, a jego jedynymi mieszkańcami są roboty w różnych kształatach i wymiarach - wszystkie wzorowane są na świecie rzeczywistym, dlatego gracz napotka m.in. robota-policjanta, robota-złoczyńcę czy robota-psa. Uważam, że świat przedstawiony jest ciekawie nakreślony, a fabuła jest dobra. Niesamowita jest dla mnie grafika - pomimo niemalże 12 (!) lat od premiery w chwili pisania recencji, gra wizualnie wygląda fantastycznie, co jest zasługą ręcznie wykonanych rysunków, teł i animacji. Co ważne, w grze nie ma przydługich dialogów, bo... nie ma ich wcale - postaci porozumiewają się za pomocą dymków dialogowych z prostymi symbolami bądź animacjami. Nie można zapomnieć o ścieżce dzwiękowej - ta również nie odstaje poziomem od reszty elementów składowych gry. Zagadki wymagają pomyślunku, niektóre są prostsze, inne z kolei trudniejsze, a rozwiązywanie ich sprawia satysfakcję. Na zapoznanie się z całą grą potrzebne jest między 5 a 6 godzin. Co do głównej mechaniki gry - gracz za pomocą kursora myszy wskazuje konkretne elementy, co sprawia, że protagonista wchodzi z nimi w interakcję. Nie ma tu żadnej rewolucji, jednak zakres wchodzenia w interakcję ograniczony jest jedynie do najbliższego otoczenia postaci. Moim zdaniem Machinarium jest grą bardzo dobrą, która przez te wszystkie lata od premiery nie zestarzała się wcale. Grając w nią spędziłem miło czas i sądzę, że warto się z tym tytułem zapoznać.

Beautiful and difficult

I loved playing this game. It absolutely gorgeous to look at, and has one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a very long time (think Wall-E meets underground electronic music). My only complaint is that some of the puzzles were less than obvious, meaning that I didn't even realize there what the puzzle I needed to solve was until I looked for a hint (I doubt I could've beat the game without a hint or two). Regardless, any lover of point-and-click adventure games will find plenty of awesome and beautiful gameplay here.

An okay adventure game

This game, while not as good as other fantastic adventure games, is still decent. The gameplay is okay, but the minigames that the game is full of are not fun, at least not to me. Having to do a puzzle that's completely disconnected from the actual world is to me not what an adventure game is supposed to be about. There is also the issue of not really having any objectives. You're just dropped in the world and the only clue is that the main character has a lost girlfriend. One of the biggest flaws of the game is that it is coded in flash. This makes the game incredibly clunky and also makes it impossible to right click. To be fair, I would probably have liked this game more if I was a more seasoned adventure gamer, but that is not where the problem with the game is. The story is minimalistic, which some people might like. I, however, did not. All truly great adventure games have fantastic stories, and I just don't feel motivated when I'm some random robot without a purpose. This lack of story is probably what, if not kills the game for me, at least damages it badly. The artstyle of the game is okay, it looks good. Everything is hand drawn and you can't really complain about the visuals. In conclusion, the game is decent, but doesn't really drag me in, due to the lack of story and immersionbreaking flash hiccups.
