I can´t love it nor hate it...

If you have played the older LordsOTR 1 and especially 2, you will have some demands on how a game of this series should look and feel like... But almost all of those expectations will be disappointed. This game is NOT turn based, it is NOT following the old "grow food and build weapons to supply your army" principle. The game is mostly about two things : hectic and pure luck. Why is this? 1) You need "Lords" to do anything, from building an army over generating money to even charm the church. You have only to recruit them and assign them to a piece of land, now becoming their fiefdom. Those "Lords" just pop up at your .. let it be called "lord recruiting pool" and come with greatly variing skills at their profession. Some bring big armies with them for just hiring them, some do not. But those lords do appear purely at random, especially the low level ones at the beginning of each game and it can be frustrating to see that the AI get´s all the good ones. Later on in the game there are better "high level lords", but they have special prerequirements like "army size xxl", "xyz gold in your treasurery" or "min. owned land" before you can hire them. This is where a little strategy and planning comes in and brings the game at least a little bit closer to the "S" in "RTS"... (I hope GOG has included the full manual and hints with this game, since in some european countries (germany and netherlands) , the game was distributed without any reference on how to aquire the higher level lords..) 2) The hectic clicking: Since all players, human and AI all act in real time, the lightning-fast assignment of lords is crucial especially at the beginning of the game. And did you look forward to fighting a battle in real time isometric combat? Do not think of it again, because while you lead your troops in the isometric combat, the AI is marching freely on the normal map towards your capital- the AI can do both - fight and manage resources, while you have to decide : fight or management... Yes, you can switch between both at will, but this is not really an option since most players will now let BOTH things go to ruin - the battle and the management. The game is not total rubbish, since the graphics are acceptable, the music and voiceacting is okay, (it really sounds medieval ;)) But if you wonder why you might have missed this game when it was published, or, did not know until now that it actiually HAS BEEN published.. This game looked old and outdated even as it was published, and it was never a "full price" AAA title, as if the publisher was ashamed of it. And he should be, at least a little bit for naming it lotr3...

Horrible HORRIBLE game

I still play LotR 2 occasionally, and this game actually made me angry when I bought it. They took out all the interesting parts of LotR 2 and replaced them with ... nothing. Micromanagement is gone, sieges are terrible, it's not turn-based on the strategy map so the whole thing feels frantic, and the worst part is there was no documentation (that may have changed) so there was no real indication of what to do next, why some agent was pillaging your treasury all the time, etcetera. Clicking on an army, then clicking on a neighbor's kingdom automatically declared war, the battles lacked tactical abilities like subtle flanking (attacking sides of a unit from a 45-degree angle) ... this game is a mess. The only thing they upgraded was the graphics and those aren't anything interesting.

Alright and very different

Fans of Lords of the Realm I and Lords of the Realm II will likely find Lords of the Realm III a bit disorienting. All the turn-based elements are gone and the game is completely a real time strategy game. There is nothing wrong with this, but if you were a fan of the turn based strategy elements of the original two games you may be disappointed. That said the graphics are hugely improved (of course) and it's a pretty good game. The four campaigns give the game good single player value, though each campaign is somewhat short. All-in-all, GOG has some far superrior real time strategies and fans of the series may be disappointed. However, if you have the money, of you just have to complete your Lords of the Realm collection, Lords of the Realm III is a good buy.

Not As Good As LOTR 2

Thought the would build on the great parts of LOTR 2 but I mistaken. My biggest gripe is that it doesn't pause the main game for the tactical level battles and sieges, so you have the computer sending 15 armies into your territory while you're trying to win/enjoy a good battle.

A gem of its genre

Lords of the Realm III was released in 2004, roughly about eight years after its predecessor, Lords of the Realm II. As would be expected, most everything was updated, however, a lot was either removed or changed so drastically, it felt like the third game was produced by a different developer. This was not the case, as all the games in the series were developed by Impressions Games. The changes were quite unfavorable to fans, as the game was toned down in difficulty and the game was played completely in real-time. I, for one, took these changes as a welcome re-imagining of those historic times. Castle management was a lot easier and you had to manage assaults to and on several fronts. The latter was a lot more forgiving than it sounds, as you could leave an assault in the hands of the AI at any time and tend to other, more important matters, or you could jump in and redirect the AI's decisions if you found them unfavorable. Units were also quite easy to manage. You had your several types of infantry units, cavalry and siege weapons, but each type of unit from either category served best in a certain situation. That isn't to say they weren't generally useful, but it serves to show the developers made the game feel right at home for both casual and more serious gamers. The AI, too, made good use of the units you left it in charge with, further showing the dedication inserted in offering a very good experience. The story mode featured four campaigns, that dealt a little more heavily on diplomacy, but in general you felt compelled to use your brawn rather than brains. This might put off some players, but to me the mix felt just right. As expected, the campaigns increased in difficulty as you progressed, giving way to improving your micromanagement skills on all the fronts presented to you. The visual wonders this game has to offer are very welcome in this type of game. As the engine makes use of 3D as much as any strategy game of 2004, it can only complement the remarkable gameplay it has to offer. You never really feel assaulted with crammed visuals even in hectic battles. It just feels right. This is also further enhanced by the sounds. Both the musical score and the voice acting fit perfectly, I can't really add much more to this except that you must taste it yourself to fully appreciate it. In conclusion, this would fit in any real-time strategist's game collection even if it is a break from all the straight-forward battle-oriented games of this genre available out there. It feels fresh while also familiar to enjoy.
