Oldie but goldie
Nice old RPG. Not best, not bad. Something to play between bigger and newer games.

I have a history with this game - This must be remade!
I first played this game as a demo version in late 2003. I really liked it as the demo version really lured me in. I played it quite a few times. Then I forgot about it because I couldn't really buy the full version from anywhere as I was living in a different country then. In 2006, I saw a single boxed copy of this game being sold at a local store in their games section. I never expected this game to show up at my local store of all places and the price was incredibly high too. I kept seeing this game in it's box for a few months in that store glass display box and it kept getting to me. I eventually began to worry if it would be bought by someone else or if the store would remove it really soon. I eventually couldn't help myself and asked my big sister to buy it and after thinking about it, I really didn't expect this lone copy to be bought by anyone else as I'm pretty much one of the extremely few kids who used to play such PC games in my country. I still have those original discs today and the manual. I have played this game many times and I keep coming back to it. I thought I last played this for my last time in 2010 but I played this again earlier this year (2012) because I found a cheat code of this game. I finished in less than 7 days and boy it was really fun to play with the tables turned against the enemies for once :). I couldn't really find the bonus CD content online anymore as I did in the past so I was kicking myself for deleting that file years ago from my PC. I didn't update my game to its most recent patch because it would have rendered the cheat code unusable. This is one of those very underrated games for sure. A game maker needs to look at this game. This game has a lot of potential and is quite fun to play but most of the latter half takes a combat turn. Overall, this game could have been much better. I believe, the game makers were having issues during the time before the release of this so they rushed this game to the shelves. In that case, this game should have never hit the shelves because it was greatly incomplete (injustice to the game). A good game should never take a turn like Lionheart did. It started out so good and then fell apart. If your character wasn't strong enough, you would have great difficulty during the latter part of this game. For me, Lionheart is an incomplete game with tons of potential. This game could have been right up there with Age of Mythology - one of my favorites and a highly successful game from the Lionheart era. Overall, this game is still worth playing, though it is incomplete and falls way short of it's complete potential. It was great to see this game listed here on this site. I only hope that a game maker might pick up on this game and make it again to it's full potential and with an even greater diversity. They just don't make games like this anymore. After this era, I left PC gaming for good as it all became about performance and graphics and what not.........geeeez. Thanks for reading my rant.

It has its moments, but never more!
Where to begin when everything has already been said? Yes, the first third of the game is quite good. You have a city to explore, NPC to talk to, sidequests to do and its quite good. Not on the Fallout 2 or Baldur's Gate 2 level but still quite enjoyable. However after you leave Barcelona for Montserrat, the game stars to change. After that section the game becomes much more linear lacking of everything what made the Barcelona section good. No interesting sidequests, no interesting characters, just a series of brutally long dungeons with tons of enemies and no way to rest to heal. You cannot rest in a tent, you cannot even rest in inns, you just have to wait. While HP comes up fairly quickly, Mana is a completely different story. 1 single point of Mana takes 4 seconds to appear, which means, when you want to fill your Mana to the top and you have no blue element around you, you just have to wait several tens minuts! I am not kidding. Good luck when you are going for a full mage build. While the game uses the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. RPG system known from the Fallout series, it just does not feel right in this game. Something's wrong in Lionhear, but as if you had much more control over you progress when developing your character in Fallout. Maybe it's that the game punishes you for increasing the power just in one or two categories. At the end of the game I had to use 3 points just to increase my electric magic by 1 point. I used all 21 points I got after leveling on the electric magic and it did not matter at all. The power of the magic barely increased. I have my suspicion that just some builds works here, otherwise you are doomed. The story and the world-building were good but not even close to the perfection of Arcanum. This game has a potential but it's broken, badly designed, very rushed in the second half and dont get me started on how awfully bad your companions can be/are. The battle system is just button mashing. Nah, one of the worst RPGs ever.

Some tragic failings of a decent game
It was difficult to subdue the nostalgia that would've otherwise driven me to give this mess a 4/5 review. But reviews should be honest, and new players will not have the benefit of Lionheart being one of the first games they ever played. It has its charm - the art direction is nice, the city of Barcelona feels alive when you first loiter around it, the music, while composed of pretty short loops is pretty and fits the aesthetic (the guitar theme lives in my head rent free). It doesn't shy away from tackling pretty serious topics of persecution, and, for the most part, does them justice, and it has a nice breadth of choices and builds one can dive into, for added replayability and fun. It is, however, unfinished, and by the halway point into the game, the quality starts to drop. It becomes more of a grind, of your character going through megadungeons filled with more and more enemies and less and less story, while the difficulty ramps. The final act of the game is severely disappointing, and feels rushed - because it was rushed. There are also some technical problems. Sometimes when you load into the game, your attack speed goes down, while keeping the same inaccuracy from your higher chosen speed. Positioning of enemies can be wonky, like them shooting at your character from inside the wall. But generally, nothing a quick reload wouldn't be able to fix. The difficulty curve is punishing, and the game doesn't indicate in any way how your skill levels relate to the actual difficulty of whatever you're trying to accomplish. I honestly recommend, if you want to try the game - it is very much combat centric, and if you try to spec into more of a charismatic character, like you would in other RPGs, you will suffer in the later parts of the game. So yeah. The game clearly had potential, I would love to see more in the world created for it, but the execution is lacking.

Had everything to be good, but...
I had Lionheart once and stopped playing but I didn't remember why. Then I bought here on GOG to play again and then I remembered why. The game has a great appeal for his SPECIAL engine, similar to the great Fallout, and i thought to myself: Black isle, SPECIAL engine, medieval setting... this has everything to be a great game. but it was not. The game starts great (only reason I didn't gave 1 star), you have Barcelona to explore and meet various characters (Da Vinci, Gallileo, Shakespeare etc.), starts some sub plots. But once you in a faction, the good game ends. You leave Barcelona behind and start a dungeon crawling spree where only combat skills and perks are important. Bad for me, for I choose Speech/Barter for one of my tag skills. At some point, I thought we could have some rest of this killing spree and reach a city where you can talk to people and restock your potions. But you don't. I left Barcelona with 30 healing potion and that's it. You will be dependant of the spirit essence, witch id RARE. The game resume in: Explore, find a bunch of enemies, kill them (witch took 30 seconds more or less) and wait 10 minutes to recover. 40 hours of gameplay, 30 hours you spend waiting to recover (maybe its just me, but i find the combat really dificult, most enemies has insane critical rate). I was about to give up, but I wanted to see the ending so I gathered all patience and... finished it. Really sad, Lionheart had everything to be a awesome game.
