I found this game interesting and rather deep, the minimal level designs and the very minimal story telling is mysterious and yet rather deep, the story is based on a "What If" Scenarios.
Makes you wonder if the CCCP ever did find something during the great space race and covered up the truth about what they found out there in space.
There's enjoyment to be had in Lifeless Planet as you explore a barren alien world and investigate the mystery behind its ecological collapse. But, despite the interesting premise, it fails to fully deliver in the end both in gameplay and a plot that serves its purpose, but offers little in the way of explanation or depth.
Screenshots alone will tell you that Lifeless Planet doesn't excel when it comes to detailed graphics. It does, however, manage for the most part to create an interesting alien world that features some moments where it's worth just stopping and admiring the vista. The absence of a HUD, or indeed any on-sceen information, is an effective complement to viewing the world as if through your own eyes.
The world seems large, yet offers little incentive for exploration. In part, because the linearity of the game means there's nothing to find or do away from key locations, and that same linearity of design leads you back onto the path the game wants you to take by creating impassable barriers that restrict exploration in other directions often because it's too far to jump down to the valley below, or your jetpack doesn't have the oomph to allow you to jump up to the ledge or plateau above.
At heart, Lifeless Planet is a platformer. Albeit a not particularly demanding one. For those like me who generally find platformers to be too frustrating to complete, the difficulty level is ideal. Fans of platformers may well find it far too easy a challenge to deliver satisfaction.
And it is easy. Yes you can die, but there's no real sense of jeopardy in any situation you encounter. Constant visual clues show you the path to follow, or the dangers to avoid. The puzzles are easily solved. The only real difficulty seems to be a result of an inconsistent physics model resulting in some longer jumps being difficult to gauge when using a boosted jetpack.
In conclusion, Lifeless Planet offers a handful of hours of moderate entertainment, but buy when discounted.
Nothing really happens, and the walking and jumping is overkill.
It's 4-5 hours, so if the game had half the amount of walking/jumping that would've at least condensed it down to a few hours and made it a bit more enjoyable.
You can only give a thumbs up or down rather than a score, so to say I don't recommend it at all seems a bit harsh because by the end I was kinda ok with it. Just every time there was one or two jumping/walking areas too many.
This game is a few years old now, so I would say it is probably not worth full price unless you are a massive fan of these kind of "journey" games. The graphics haven't aged well....although the game does well with its slightly limited graphics, to still make a very atmospheric game world which really adds to the experience alot. I believe this helped me get captivated in the story and gave me the feeling that I wanted to finish the game. I played it in 2 game sessions, something I rarely do... even though the game is only 5 hours long at best. The platforming and puzzle elements are very light and never challenging...something that I didn't mind and at least gives you something to do along the way. If you are after a hardcore platformer or puzzler... this game is not for you. The story and the atmosphere are the main plus points and, for me, I enjoyed the game immensely because of this. Although I dont feel the need to replay the game I am very happy I took the plunge to play this game. One gripe though...with only a handful of character models, I would have hope for better quality ones but ...hey ho :)
Hey all, I'm just writing here because I enjoyed this game alot and wanted to provide my perspective, which differs from many of the negative reviews. This is a puzzle game / walking simulator with some mild platforming elements. I played the game probably a year or more ago, and it's certainly memorable in my case.
Pros:
- I loved the visuals and huge sense of scale. I often found myself climbing up to a high point just to get a different view.
- I loved exploring the atmosphere and foreign landscape.
- I loved the idea, and the juxtaposition of familiar with unfamiliar.
- I liked trying to get to some places that gamers aren't supposed to be able to reach. (I actually wish there were more easter egg-type rewards for exploring.)
- Really good music - synced up with actions - kindof like the music is cheering you on in places.
- The mystery of what's going on in the world is effective to facilitate the exploring.
- developer participated in one of the gaming forums which I appreciate.
Cons:
- a little too much jumping in a few places that can be frustrating for this kind of game.
- the game invites you to explore the big world, but doesn't reward exploration as much as it seems like it could. This type of game likely appeals to somebody who just likes to look around.
- The "completionist" mineral hunting is not a very good incentive to explore imho. Not far into the story you're totally uninterested in finding rocks. But it would be cool to happen upon ancillary parts of the world to make it feel more complete.
- I encountered a bug - frustrating issue in a platforming section that I found had turned me around after I died, so I was actually running backwards for a bit - but nothing game-breaking.
Anyhow, I just wanted to give a positive viewpoint on the game. It's one of the more memorable games I played in the last year or two - and I'd hate for some to miss it if it's their kind of thing. If the above sounds interesting to you, give it a go.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
