Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?

the game is a nice alternative BUT

just to add a few negative points you should be aware of (the game IS fun but all the good has been said so im rather listing a few negative points for you to have a balanced review - i am not done with the game but im at the end of lvl 7 so i think i have a good idea) - what i didnt like: - the character creation needs some overhaul...more customization options that make sense etc.. it feels a bit "beta" like - i think there would be A LOT of room here, for customization, magic, skills, traits etc (maybe even a classless system?) - clumsy control - some of the puzzle require extreme timing and precision, but the controls are pretty clumsy which makes some puzzles really annoying - trial and error puzzles -> this for me personally is a sign of bad puzzle design...not all puzzles are trial and error, but a few and these are quite boring because they simply eat up time... - combat - the combat is the most boring element of the game unfortunatly (well an isometric tactical battle simply does more for you...action battles dont fit oldschool games very well) - reason for that is that you dont have any options...the basic strategy involves circling around an enemy hitting him and not trying to get hit...it becomes really boring fast i do think its a good game and a nice alternative - but i also think the game could have been much more than it is

Big disapointment

For me LoG is just a little too frustrating in some areas to enjoy it. Good side: - Some good puzzle - Nice graphics but too powerhungry. nice lighting system. Bad side: -does not run very smooth on older pc. - Very simple dungeon design -Annoying reallime circle stafe combat style that gets unfair with more then 2 enemy mobs. The combat gets boring very fast. - bad skillsystem - no character progression, no feeling of getting stronger. Monster are always better then my party - 3 classes in a rpg in 2012? jeah nicely done - bad simple skill system. Just put 4 skillpoints per level from 1 to 50. You can only max one skill and a halve until endgame. Hybrid classes are screwed. - No active skills only passive - Magic system is annoying. You have to push all rune buttons for every cast again and again. Trust me you will have to cast a lot of fireballs = 3 runes. - No story to tell of. - No shops, Npcs or anything interesting inside the dungeon besides monster, walls und some puzzles. - Most important thing in this game is your coordination and mouse reflexes. If you have slow reflexes don not buy this game. You will only get frustration out of it. - last part of the game is too difficult and frustrating. When the first part is hard, the last part gets impossible rather quick. Monster camping before the stairway with no way to kite them. Yeah. Endboss spawning endless waves of minions, that block your path, surround you and make kiting impossible? Sure. I do not think anyone of the developers bothered with a playtest of this mess. The game starts very good but soon becomes a boring snore fest of circle strafing and ancient grind game mechanics like casting spells with 3 or more runes again and again. Difficulty rating is frustrating. Many puzzles are only try and error or really hard to master, like the guitar hero light bolt dance. Ah the title RPG is misleading. This game is more an action adventure of a kind, not a rpg. Because in a rpg stats matter. In LoG only your mouse skills matter. And your frustration tolerance. Have a nice day

Requires High Dexerity

I want to like the game, but the combat and some of the movement puzzles are real-time which is a real turn off for someone without the reflexes of a 20 year old.

How fast can you click?

I really liked the feel, but it is real time. The heart of battle is click through your heroes and their inventory, or runes for spell casting. I find that I lose battle from getting flustered / out of rhythm. I mis-click picking up the weapon instead of attacking with it and so on. I am over 40 and just prefer a turn based or system you can pause. If I fail I want t to be because of a tactical error, not a fail in speed clicking.

Mediocre

I really wanted to like this game a lot. I love dungeon crawlers and I was stoked to play this game. I don't want to quite give it 3 stars but 4 would be too high so let's say its a solid 3.5, and that extra half point because the price is reasonable. Maybe I was expecting too much or something like the late Wizardry, Might and Magic, or Eye of the Beholder series but it doesn't come close. The game is fun in its own right so I won't take that away but its kind of repetitive after a while and the dungeons are too linear, you'll be basically exploring a tiny section at a time until you find keys, stones, or whatever to unlock different areas and rinse and repeat. Its also pretty bare bones for a dungeon crawler. There's no shops or people selling or buying goods, no NPC's to interact with or extra quests, there are only a few different monsters, no disarming traps or picking locks. All these missing things take a lot away from what could've been an awesome game. The game looks nice but I was never a graphic nut so it would've been fine if it looked like NES graphics. I'm fine with the amount of classes and races since you can basically fine tune them with skills. There could've been a few more skills for further fine tuning and more abilities for the mage but its passable as is. The amount of equipment is slightly lacking also. The puzzles are ok but nothing memorable. You can make potions and such with a pestle and mortar which is nice. The price is very reasonable for what it is. A basic no frills dungeon crawler. I congratulate the team making this game for bringing us a dungeon crawling title. And I hope they make more in the future but hopefully something with a little more zing and flair.
