Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

In gameplay, Grimrock plays exactly like Stonekeep with improvements (side-stepping and beginning party). I've not yet finished it, but after about thirty hours it's a really strong really enjoyable First person RPG.
I like the game. It is D&D for one player. You don't have to call your friends, just play this game. LOG has many hidden location, it is very satisfying to find them. During battle if you have only one monster and 2x2 squares, fight is won without one scratch. That is little bit boring. Casting spells and learning them is quite cool! Save points restore dead member of your group. The final battle and ending was small disappoitment, but gameplay and level desing is excellent.
Love that retro Lands of Lore/Stonekeep feel, but some of those puzzles came straight from Hell! It is fun until you encounter those godawful, brutal puzzles that'll you simultaneously ragequitting and smashing your keyboard. Not all of them are like that, but you WILL encounter the ones that are.
This is an enjoyable romp through a true deathtrap dungeon. You will not see the light of day for a good 15-20 hours depending on how thorough you are. There's puzzles, keys, monsters, treasures, and of course, secrets. The closest comparisons would likely be Dungeon Master and the Eye of the Beholder series, or maybe even Lands of Lore. It's tile-based and it can be difficult. There's plenty of nasty surprises waiting for you in the depths of Grimrock Mountain.
All in all, I did have fun with this game. Now that I have started the second one, I don't know I'd have the patience to play this one. If you are considering playing both, start here. I saw this mainly because of the enhancements made in the sequel. Grimrock can get a little tedious - there's only a few different wall texture schemes and maybe about 15 or so creature types. It is challenging, however, as you can easily get overwhelmed or backed into a corner. This isn't a game where you can just mow down your enemies or powerlevel past them. Levels are slow to gain and you simply will not max out any skills unless you spend a LOT of time in the game (and it's not needed). I think my highest skill number was 30 on any character (out of 50). You can't be a jack of all trades either, so focus on skills you want and keep things there. Don't count on having everyone wearing plate mail and flaming swords, while wielding fireballs.
So, if you recently enjoying Might and Magic X, with its return to a tile-based system (this game does not have any quests or NPCs exactly, so I am not comparing it to MMX), then you will likely enjoy this one. I am looking forward to more time spent in the sequel, it's simply that much better..
Have fun!
It's a rather excellent dungeon crawler. Atmospheric, difficult at times, and with plenty of secrets. Doesn't seem to have a lot of replay value as item locations and the like at set and not randomized, but at face value, I'm glad I played it.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
