Soul Reaver 2 picks up where Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver left off, with Raziel having just plunged through the Chronoplast time portal in his relentless pursuit of Kain. Over the course of his quest for revenge, Raziel must unearth the mysteries of Nosgoth’s ancient races, expose the machinations behind the corruption of the Pillars, and the vampire genocide. Throughout the game, Raziel acquires numerous new abilities, weapon enhancements, and spells, all of which are critical to the completion of his epic adventure.
Soul Reaver is a third-person combat adventure filled with devious puzzles and kick-ass combat. Fly, swim, jump, and even travel from the material world to the spectral realm to overcome obstacles and conquer your enemies. With over 40 abilities to choose from, no two fights will ever be the same.
Are you ready to bring an end to the Legacy of Kain?
Acquire new and improved Soul Reaver weapon enhancements, physical abilities, and relics to interact with the environment and unlock the dark secrets of Nosgoth.
Play through a gorgeous gothic realm of highly detailed architecture and environments, with an appropriately baroque plot as well.
Devour the souls of new enemies including vampire hunters, Sarafan warrior-priests, and extra-dimensional demons.
So yeah.. it's a Tomb Raider'esque thing with a vampire, dual-world gameplay and a good story. Sold? Good. It also has terrible controls and suffers from cut-content. Still sold? Good.
The thing with Soul Reaver is it's uniqueness in assembling parts that are not that unique. We've all done 3rd person jumping and fighting, collected souls and shifted between worlds, but not maybe in the same game in the same bizarre universe. A recommended journey with some beauty flaws.
I love the Kain series and I have a lot of love for this game specifically. The twists and turns the story takes are very entertaining and I love the voice acting. This particular game lacks on thing that I enjoyed in the first soul reaver however. They pretty much removed all boss fights. I loved the boss fights because really they were puzzles. You couldn't just hack the boss to death, you had to look around for its weakness. Now the game itself added a lot more puzzles to its gameplay through use of the usually block puzzles, gliding puzzles, and light reflection puzzles. All fun, but I still miss the boss fights. If you enjoyed soul reaver you should enjoy this game though. I have replayed this game a whole bunch of times mostly because I just love the feeling I get when you finish and watch the ending movie.
I played the game because I like the story and dialogues. Little did I know that the gameplay is frustrating and rage inducing. I can't use my controller for this game so it was with keyboard and mouse. I've never managed to win a fight fairly. The enemies can just block you and you have to wait for them to stop or you can't damage them, the heavy attacks are useless, they hit faster than you and sometimes with a better reach, you can crouch to dodge some attacks if you can read them in half a second, the black demons are the worst part because they can just stunlock you. The only viable way to fight was to run around and swing the arms hoping to hit something.
The last level needs you to be invicible to have a chance against the remaining enemies.
The immortal vampire turned wraith I was playing was so weak compared to everything else I avoided most fights because the only interesting thing about them was to heal.
Loved Blood Omen 1 and Defiance, I have yet to play the 1st Soul Reaver but this one disgusted me
I absolutely loved Blood Omen 1, and I was a little bit soured by Soul Reaver 1 but I was still cautiously optimistic about Soul Reaver 2 and hoping it would improve on it’s predecessor.
And I’m glad to say that, at least in my opinion, Soul Reaver 2 was better than Soul Reaver 1.
The combat is... rather tedious and not particularly fun, at least for me. It mostly comes down to the fact that it’s actually POINTLESS. You gain nothing by defeating enemies, no experience, no gold, no loot.
The puzzles were generally an improvement over Soul Reaver 2 – gone are the repetative blocks, you mostly deal with thinking about how to traverse the enviroment and remove obstacles using the different elemental Reaver powers.
But what elevates Soul Reaver 2 over SR1 in my opinion is that it seems to have a significantly better ratio of story/lore/dialogue to combat/puzzles than SR1 in favor of the former. There’s still a bit of backtracking, but you can skip most of combat with no consequence and the puzzles are generally more engaging than in SR1.
And the story is quite interesting, with lots of twists and turns, and lots of recontextualizing previous events, casting them in a new light. It seems to contain some retcons, although that might just be misremembering things from SR1 and BO1. Generally even if they are retcons they weren’t that obtrusive, and the story answered a couple of questions. It also brought up many new ones, and while the game ended on a kind of sequel bait again it was less aggrovating than in SR1.
The voiceacting is still very good. While I find Raziel himself not that compelling, Kain’s and the Elder God’s voiceacting is pure audio gold and I savoured every one of their lines.
If you think you’d enjoy watching a frist timer going thorugh the game blind and trying to decipher what is it about, you can see it here on my channel:
