LOL 1 - Best PC adventure game
The first lands of lore (CD version) is one of the most atmospheric and engrossing PC adventure rpgs. The second installment, not so much.

Good and OK
The first LOL, I really liked. It's sort of like Towers: Lord Baniff's Deceit and TI-83 DOOM. It's very simple but yet rather long and a lot to collect. It took me about within a month maybe 1/2 a month to get through. You get to choose one of 4 characters and then a 4 armed creature and some other guy joins you later as you fight your way to defeat a witch who has hexxed the king of the kingdom. Annoying factor is that enemies can sometimes destroy your armor. But overall, a fun game. You can replay it as another character and it is even possible to skip the most infamous part of the "monsters with many mouths" in the mines. The second game isn't as great. The graphics and gameplay are more advanced, but you only control one character throughout the whole game. It is far longer than the previous game, as it took me almost 2 months to get through. You are the son of the witch from the first game, trying to rid an ancient curse. Interesting thing is you can be evil or good. The game overall is OK, but not as great as the first one.

One of my favorites growing up.
Lands of Lore 1 is a timeless classic. 5 stars no question. Lands of Lore 2, I never liked 1 bit, the whole randomly transforming put me off the game so much I never played it for more than 30 minutes. If you buy this, buy it for 1, 2 is one that has little appeal.

Worth trying out
This game is certainly worth trying out, especially if you want to see how games were back then. But, to be honest, I can't fully understand the enthusiasm for it that is present here on GOG. Obviously, the visuals can't be compared to modern standards and may be too much for some. For me, as I love old games and don't mind low resolution graphics, it was ok and didn't disturb my experience. Audio is better, with nice music and fully voiced dialogs, but don't expect rich sound design. In terms of gameplay game has really got old. Let's face it: RPG combat mechanics weren't perfect back then. It works like hack and slash with delay and is really not fun - after performing some action, be it attack or cast spell, you wait a while until actions are available again and click them as soon as possible. It all feels chaotic and random. The other thing, related to gameplay, is level design, which is often poor. You spend endless hours roaming endless dungeons, and you are often forced to travel back and forth. Riddles are sometimes good, but sometimes totally unintuitive so you often waste time searching for some hidden button or trying different combination of levers, which teleport you to the other end of the dungeon, but it's not where you wanted to get, so you travel back to those levers, try something different and so on... thank God for saves. Despite these flaws, I had a good time with this game. It really gives you the sense of adventure, which is so rare in modern games. At the beginning you are really eager to leave the castle and discover the world that awaits. Also, after each dungeon there is some kind of a prize: a cutscene, some dialog, new companion, plot development and you really feel rewarded for all your hard work. This feeling is also hard to find in games today and for those two - sense of adventure and feeling of being rewarded - I give the game 4 out of 5 stars, despite the fact, that it is more like a 3+/5 game.
