Fabuła:
Czechy, leżące w sercu Europy, to region bogaty w kulturę, srebro i wielkie zamki. Śmierć ukochanego władcy, Karola IV Luksemburskiego, pogrążyła królestwo w mroku: wojna, korupcja i chaos rozdzierają ten klejnot Świętego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego.
Udając dobrą wolę, Zygmunt rusza do Czech i porywa swojego przyrodniego brata.
Potężny, realistyczny, otwarty świat: Majestatyczne zamki i ogromne przestrzenie zostały wyrenderowane w niesamowitej grafice najnowszej generacji.
Rozwój postaci: Rozwiń swoje umiejętności, zdobądź profity, wykuj i ulepsz wyposażenie.
Dynamiczny świat: Twoje decyzje wpływają na reakcje osób wokół ciebie. Walcz, kradnij, uwódź, groź, przekonuj lub przekupuj. Decyzja należy do ciebie.
Wierność historyczna: Spotkaj prawdziwe postacie historyczne i zanurz się w realistycznie odtworzonych średniowiecznych Czechach.
I wish they had released this game in a more playable state. It shows a lot of promise, but the technical issues drastically reduce enjoyment and break immersion in the game. Maybe someday this game will live up to its potential, but that potential has not yet been realized as of the time of this review.
The performance is awful. No modern game should struggle this much on a 7700K and a GTX 1070. During some cutscenes, the framerate drops into the teens, assuming that the game doesn't simply crash at the cutscene. If Witcher 3 ran beautifully for you (especially if you have a high refresh rate monitor), you've been spoiled; don't expect the same from this game.
The save system combined with frequent crashes makes free exploration a huge hassle. Wandering around without starting a quest or visiting a save point is a gamble with your time. The game might crash or something might bug out and you've lost an hour or three returning to the last save that you made. It really breaks the immersion knowing that each movement you make could be your last before the game does something that stops your progression.
First off, I believe if you enjoyed other RPG's such as Witcher and Skyrim then I imagine you'll really enjoy the game.
Skyrim in particular is a good example here because it's a great example of a franchise (Elder Scrolls) that has some very obvious hitches here and there that are forgiven by the community.
**Pros**
This section would be vast but I'll try highlighting points I feel people would be most interested in,
. The world feels alive - things go on without you and it *feels* like quests are being spawned on the fly (they aren't).
. There really is multiple angles - If you fail on a particular method of completing a quest (and the game expects this) there are other ways to tackle it. An example would be getting a item, you either fight the guy who has it, pickpocket him and take his keys and steal it, or sometimes you compete with them for the item you need. In cases such as competition it is normally a scripted event, but you still typically have to find the means to unlock that event.
. Some areas are extremely in depth - A good example here is alchemy, you have recipes and you have to cook them as described. First you have to lay out the ingredients manually, then decide what liquid to place it in based on the recipe (water, wine ect...) whether to boil and how much, whether to grind the herbs before you add - you get the idea. Funnily enough you also have to learn to read, the better your reading level, the less scrambled the words.
. Combat - For me this is in depth and entertaining, when you start unlocking more combos and constantly parry and riposte it feels satisfying.
. Exploration - some of the forestry, towns and *interesting places* are well, interesting! - AND BEAUTIFUL.
. Risk/Reward - Another one of those that seems to be splitting the camp, a habit of some RPG players is to save before any decision is made or search online (you know who you are). This game tries to make you think about decisions because it isn't as easy as reloading a file if it goes sour. This makes you really plan out sometimes before you pursue a task, such as getting some charisma buffs before you try to convince someone to help, or you train in the arena before you subdue some bandits. Some may hate it, but the restricted saving does add some extra level of conviction in this game, with the upcoming patch to allow to save on exit, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice to mod the game on your first play through. (As a side note, a few hours into the game it really doesn't become difficult to obtain the drink needed to save.)
.Levelling - Things do start off rough, the game has some great progression however, tasks such as taking on a group of 3/4 bandits will cause a lot of stress but if you train for a few hours and go back its a cinch, for example.
*Cons*
These are absolutely small details I can think of that do break the immersion/spoil certain aspects of the game for me.
.Post Romancing -Most RPG's have a 'meh' end to a quest track after you finally 'bed' the lady (in this case) where the character has some mild dialogue changes here, or some extra repeatable cut scene there. In this game however, you bed certain characters and they turn into a generic townsman, by which I mean the dialogue options you get are the same dialogue options you get if you talk to Jeff in the local tavern, it just dampens the previous experience, in one case you simply cant interact ever again with the NPC.
.Map borders/Hunting - One minor but frustrating detail, when you near the edge of the map your character is forced to walk at an incredibly slow pace to an eventual stop, however there is no such barrier for NPCs. So imagine this, you're hunting a boar, it runs past said barrier, you are 20% walking pace chasing after it and it's going full pace into the horizon, basically, you aren't ever getting said boar unless you leave and return.
.Multiple NPC combat - I remember quotes along the lines of avoiding multiple person combat as you will die, now... this would be true if the enemies all attacked you. A good example of what I mean is when I saved and tested out my levelled up sword skills by fighting guards in a town. There were around 5/6 guards on my screen with more piling up, however 2, or a maximum (rare) of 3 would participate, with 1 of those not really landing any blows to avoid the others, effectively you never fight more than two opponents, others just run on the spot in the background until one dies and then they participate. This makes multiple opponents redundant and a wipe up of the entire towns population possible (yeah, that's right, I didn't die - My sword skill was only level 10 of a max of 20.)
In summary, it's worth buying, this review is after 20~ hours of gameplay, make of that what you will.
Such a good game. Amazing experience if it wasn't for some really frustrating bugs.
Also the npc animations when they walk... just walk... They look like they just found out that they got cancer and 2 days to live (no arm musces whatsoever)
Looks rather funny.
Still, this is kind of a game that I live for. Love being there.
Just wish I could fast forward the time to a final patch.
Also... I find it little strange that Germans get to have their own voiceover. Germans of all people. Wow... Not even the Chechs got one or Poles or Slovaks which should definitely have their own voiceover being in the same area and with all the history they got.
It's a shame. But I'm sure dev's got their reasons.
Great game with many flaws. The combat is essentially Mount and Blade on hard mode with a stamina bar. It's visceral and exciting the whole game; which ended up being around 80 hours for me. The skill system is exactly like Oblivion, only instead of magic, there are era-appropriate skills like horseriding.
The story is middling. Some people really like it, and honestly, it is very cinematic. Not in a marketing buzzword way either: the cutscenes have tight framing, use the rule of thirds frequently, and had eye-catching mise en scene a few times too. It's a shame then that the writing prides itself on political intrigue and villains that aren't even developed. Tack on a plot twist from a very famous blockbuster trilogy and by the end you'll be let down. By the way, nothing after Skalitz has any consequence on the story. You could watch the ending cutscene and you would miss nothing in the main plot.
Then you have the cherrypicked historical accuracy. The story gives Henry more upward mobility than retail workers in 21st century America. Nevermind the piles and piles of wealth he single-handedly got in a matter of WEEKS. The outfits are very good, especially compared to other video games, but they're far from perfect. The combat is fun, but if you think people circle-strafed until they could pull off a wombo-combo perfect parry, you should read a combat manual. Peasants can hack away at you with dinky shortswords while you're wearing full plate. Yeah, no. That didn't happen.
Last, and worst of all, the save system is just plain bad. It's not immersive, it's not difficult it just a waste of time. I had 10-20 save potions the whole game and at least 10 hours of my playtime was doing shit over. Why? Because I always wanted to save them for a tough fight -- one that never came. Mod it out. It's worthless.
The bugs were bad, but only one or two were serious. Most were graphical. If you have a low tolerance for bugs, be warned: they're everywhere.
From the moment I started playing I was into it. The world sucks you in immediatly and you quickly learn that you're no hero that can dispatch foes with ease and you actually have to TRAIN and work at combat and archery or stealing or whatever you want to survive in the world.
The immersion is great and you feel you're living the life of Henry and you can go do whatever you want once the "tutorial" is over. It's very fun. I personally learned some thieving skills and went to towns and robbed stores and rich peoples houses, pick-pocketed travelers and townsfolk, did a bit of hunting and sold the skins and meats to taverns. Whatever you fancy go and do. I pretty much ignored the main quest for most of my time and I found that it's very easy to become pretty overleveled when do you decide to go back to the main quest after all the other stuff you get into to.
The main issue I have with the game is actually the combat. For starters the lock-on mechanic is just awful and feels very restrictive in anything other than a 1v1 duel, which don't happen often. This is made worse by the fact that the Ai, regardless of who they are, are all master combatants and will perfectly block and dodge and "master strike"(a mechanic that kills the flow of combat, imo)all of your swings no matter if you attack from opposite directions of their defense. This can be done by every single enemy I've ever fought be it a well-trained knight who makes a living dueling people, or some random thug in cloth armor wielding a axe meant for cutting wood. It's hard to feel like a accomplished swordsman when every peasant and their elderly grandma fights with the tenacity and skill of a warlord.
Aside from the combat and how unoptimized it feels, everything else is pretty good. Didn't run into any game breaking bugs though the bugs are there, and some bigger towns like Sasau have some terrible FPS drops but overall the game ran good for me, and I'm on a older PC.
Would recommend getting on sale.
