A Decent RPG But...

Don't buy this game for $60 expecting a complete experience because that's not what you'll get. While the foundation of the RPG gameplay is solid and the world is fairly immersive, the game is blatantly incomplete. What I mean by this is that you cannot actually finish the main story in this game. Rather than reaching an actual ending and completing Henry's ultimate goal (get back your father's sword), you'll reach a point where the game just sort of... stops. Reading up on it, this is apparently because this game only comprises Acts 1 and 2 of the story, and Act 3 will be sold separately as a sequel. I'm okay with the devs wanting to start a franchise, but I don't feel this game's story stands on its own as a result. Instead of a beginning, middle, and end it instead just has a beginning and middle without any real conclusion or satisfaction when the "The End" screen pops up. Combine that with the fact that the game is a buggy mess at times and the quality generally goes down the further you get - as if the devs resources were running out by the end - and you'll probably finish this game with a sour taste in your mouth. That all said, there is still fun to be had here and overall I'd call this a pretty good RPG, especially for such a niche subject as a realistic, historical medieval setting. Just make sure you know what you're getting and are happy with the price you pay for it.

Good but buggy

Kingdom come feels like a game still in beta. The game itself is playable but there are still a lot of bugs even at v1.7. Combat system needs a lot of improvement. It doesn't have to be necessarily hard where players can't enjoy it. Response time is horrible. Auto lock is BS, especially in uneven terrain. Using the bow is downright stupid. It's like my character is a 5 year old trying to pull a bow. Isn't Henry supposed to be the son of a blacksmith, hammering all day, getting strong? Shit don't make sense. The story has it's goods but left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Your really gonna leave us unsatisfied after paying 60 bucks for your game? Come on. Plus a some of the quest make you go all over the map only to feel rushed and cut short. This game made me miss M&B so badly a lot of times.

Glad I got it on sale.

Firstly, I did enjoy the game. There are bugs in it, but nothing was game breaking. The pro's - historical accuracy, it’s nice to see a Medieval setting sans magic everywhere. No elves! Yes, there is an ‘alchemy’ system, but there had to be some way to heal your character. While I found it hard to get my head round, the combat system did add to the game, made you feel less like a one-man army that can destroy all in your path and more like an actual person. The plot is good, not sign posted, no surprises either. Good sized open world Awesome armour system, proper layers! Con’s… the combat, especially at first, I found to be unforgiving. You need a ‘potion’ to save, and early in the game I didn’t have many, this led to a few times where I lost 30 minutes of progress, but I ended up in unexpected combat and then died. Bugs, they are there, but nothing major. With the awesome layered armour and clothing system that made I would have loved to see a third person camera, so you can see what your character looks like (outside of the inventory screen). I know why they don’t have an aiming aid for archery, because they want a more ‘realistic’ way of combat, but I feel they could have done better at letting you view down the arrow, instead of to one side. My biggest complaint, it doesn’t feel finished, like they got to a certain point and ran out of time. Just before the end of the game they spend a good 10 minutes of exposition about characters you don’t meet. Now apparently this game is the first 2 acts, and the third act will be a separate game. Which should have been clearer in the advertising. But having this character explanation at the end of game one doesn’t make sense there, because they will only have to recap it again at the beginning of the second game, or assume that you played the first game not long before starting it. Also *spoilers* you have 2 objectives for most of the game that you cannot complete almost like.. the game didn’t get finished.

Buggy and Irritating

The game contains a strange mix of realistic and unrealistic elements. It isn't a simulator, but sometimes behaves like one. A typical example of this weird half-simulator half-game status is that one cannot save the game at will indefinitely, rather, it requires a consumable alcoholic beverage. Quests seemingly randomly care or do not care about when their contents are completed, leaving the player reeling in a strange mix of ignoring people for weeks without repercussions or punishing them for not responding immediately. In a seeming attempt to turn the combat of Chivalry or Mordhau into a single player pseudo-realistic game-sim mashup, the devs have created a strange and inconsistent game world around combat. For instance, the armor you are wearing does not really effect how much hitstun you incur when being struck, but it does mitigate the damage. The most dreadful foe one can encounter is a dog in combination with any humanoid enemy; despite wearing full plate, the dog's bite can completely restrain you for long enough for the dog's owner to kill you outright. A grazing blow from a peasant's stick can send you careening off your feet and stun you for about 3 seconds, even if the same NPC is basically incapable of injuring the player. The game wants you to choose what direction to swing your weapon in, this hardly matters at all because unlike Chivalry or Mordhau, the attacks themselves having significantly different hitboxes really does not begin to matter. The end result of the swing direction choice mechanic is just that it facilitates fakes and "combos", pre-planned sequences of swings. These two mechanics are extremely important against enemies because just about nothing else damages difficult opponents at all. Once you connect with one of these otherwise impervious enemies, you may kill him outright or need to repeat the process a dozen times, seemingly decided by chance alone. Beautiful world. Too bad it's obnoxious as hell to explore.
