It's sad to say but it it true.
Game itself is quite fun but totally broken saving makes it totally unplayable.
I've personally tried few ways I found online to tackle this problem (not saving) but nothing works.
Why GoG is not adressing this issues or remove broken games from their platform is beyond my understanding.
DON'T Ever Try To Pay Money For This Game Or You Will Waste Money.
I got this for free so no harm to my walet.
Even if you have the money, the story will NOT let you purchase them.
Not a fan of forced story telling.
The ships and weapons are fine "windward 2.0 fine".
You cannot move items from one ship to another (this forces grind).
The art choice for the narratve is (for me) jarring and not in a good way.
Wait for patches which address most of these concerns or get it 50% off.
Once upon a time King of Seas was given away for free.
Having played Sid Meirer's Pirates I downloaded the game for some nostalgic fun.
Mad it through the tutorial to my first mission, to deliver some wood to a nearby port.
Enroute, I traveled in a straight line and three level 7 gunboats spawned right next to my level 1-2 sloop.
I just went full sail in a straight line to the tutorial port and delivered the wood. I hoped it was a bug and I could outrun them. While in the dialogue screen I watched the gunboats follow me from half across the map, and close in.
I hoped I was safe in port.
The port did not care who I was, and the level 7 gunboats killed every ship in the harbor including mine.
Main menu, or restart game was my option.
I uninstalled the game.
Never spend money on this.
Let's start with the good: the ship responds to controls OK, and a snail-speed fight against the wind is not an issue like in some more realistic games. Dialogues can be sped up, cutscenes not. The extra abilities are creatively made. Fishing is well done - you don't have to waste too much time, same with repairs. No annoying minigames.
Then the less attractive aspects: The art style is horrible. To prevent a good rating it has some massive mistakes: the name of the hero: directly one star off. The comment about the gamepad in the beginning of the game: directly one star off - matey, I have played similar pirate games on a computer when Pirates! did not have the word Gold at the end yet, and this is no Monkey Island, so no bonus for you for insulting.
It could use mouse support. There was a bug in the main plot, preventing me from getting more than one pirate friend. Trading is pretty much unnecessary, because you can get money much faster pirating and selling upgrades - also, gains from trade are small.
Overall, it could use more content, but as a first game I don't see this as a hopeless effort - I did play it till the end.
After giving this game a go after it sitting in my library for ages, I'd say it deserves a better rating. Its a fun, light-hearted, ship battling RPG game with decent art that got me hooked for hours on end. I'm not sure why, but many people seems to not want to give it a decent go.
I see many reviews saying that the game doesn't save, has terrible controls or not knowing when to fire the cannons which are all valid complaints but has mostly been addressed.
If you cant get the game to save, which it won't out of the box. You'll need to delete a file named "galaxy64.dll" located in:
\King of Seas\KOS\Plugins\OnlineSubsystemGOG\Source\ThirdParty\GalaxySDK\Libraries
They've added mouse support in the latest 1.20 (Monster Update), they added support for remappable keys and an options to enable line of sight for the ship's cannons in earlier updates as well!
Here's some of my thoughts on the game and why only I gave it a 4 star:
1. No quick travel. I'm kind of on the fence on this, I would appreciate the feature but that takes away from the exploration part, with quick travel I would've missed alot of additional materials, gold and xp from floating crates, shipwrecks and crates near island shores. There's also abilities specifically to speed up the player's ships so its really not a big issue.
2. No freeroam after completion. This is frustrating, after completing the final story mission it ends with the player character sailing off and the credit rolls BUT when you try getting back in it just brings you back before the last mission. If you want to keep playing after the ending you CANNOT go close to the king's fortress as it will trigger the last mission even though you already completed the game.
3. No future updates. 1.20 will be from what I've read is the last update, the devs has delivered what they've promised and moved on the other projects even though I feel this game has massive potential.
All in all, the game still worth giving it a shot, play it!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
