King of Dragon Pass

Not a type of game you see very often nowadays. It's complex and simple at the same time. It all takes place through a main set of menus where you coordinate your efforts, and then after 'turns' (that are connected with the seasons), events take place related to the actions you perform each turn. Every season, you get 2 actions. Basically, you run a clan that's trying to settle this place called dragon pass, and you are the leader of your clan. You must explore, build your stockpiles, perform rituals to your clan's gods, and survive amongst the other residents of dragon pass (some which are real bruisers by the way). There's a huge amount of content hidden in this game. Get it, it's worth it whatever year it is.

I found this game ages ago, it is very in-depth with some of the deepest, most in-depth lore of any game I played, thanks to it's Glorantha roots. The artwork is fantastic, sharp illustrations that brings life to this world. The gameplay is quite easy to grasp, point and click interface though it provides many challenges as every game is different. Here lies the main strength: The customization starts with history of the clan, you decide who is their chief god, what specialties they have and ultimately how they would interact with part of the world, with getting bonuses if you follow lore. And there are dozens of events, many with differing chain ends, sometimes you have disaster dominoes, or streaks of incredibly good events, or a mix. For anyone who don't mind a laid-back pace and reading this is an excellent game

I just got a random event in which one of my subjects was offended by a neighbouring clan who had passed him a dirty towel to dry himself with after a meal. He wanted to raid the clan, but I had the option of composing a satirical poem about them instead, so I did. Apparently all the clans in the neighbourhood are reciting it and calling the other folks the Dirty Nose Rag Clan now. I'd recommend this game to anyone who is willing (or eager) to go into unfamiliar territory with little guidance. It will probably take a couple hours to feel like you've come to grips with the basics. If you've played any of the major Paradox releases, it's the same kind of feeling (but a very different game). It's very rewarding if you're willing to go with your gut feeling and make mistakes. Also - read the manual!

I have owned this game now for few years and completed the long game once, still I keep coming back, but I understand why others may not give it a second chance. KoDP is one of those games where you need to know how to play it, before you can really get into it. Many parts of it seem to be unfair or random, but once you get to understand how the system works, you'll be in for a long and enjoyable ride. But, even if you know what you are doing, your 5 hour play through can be stopped by a troll apocalypse lead by Cragspider. You will not be able to get through the game on your first few tries, but the stories you'll read on those trials, will hopefully make you understand this game better. Leading a clan or a tribe is not easy and you need to watch for who you have in the clan ring, for they dictate much of your success, but you also need to remember your promises to the other clans and keep the gods happy. This game wants you to read the stories of its gods and mythos, forcing player to play by its rules by smiting your tula with fury. I love the fact, that it allows me to do dumb decisions which will bite me later. Look and feel of the game are also large portion of its charm, giving it the fitting appearance and I wouldn't have it in any other way. Over all, I don't have long history with this game, but for years it has been my go to game whenever I want to have some steady, sometimes frustrating but enjoyable time.

King of dragon pass can be perfectly summarize with this simple phrase : every choice taken may have different impact on the deep fantasy world create by the developers. But let's speaking about its features in order : story wise, it takes a lot from viking and gauls culture and mythology but develop a unique pantheon and history of its won, pushing the players to dwell deeper in the game's settings in order to understand what to do. About the gameplay, its high point is freedom : you can choose the entirety of your clan history and how to deal with the various challenges thrown in your way, and they have consequences in more way than I imagined. At the same time, the game has a high learning curve (at least, that was what I felt like, for my personal skills in this genre), giving too much freedom sometimes have the side effect to leave the players wandering what to do. Speaking of the rest, the game has fitting soundtracks and the graphics are... well, spreadsheet, so there isn't much to talk about here, but the imagines are fine. So, overall a profound managerial experience that manages (pun intended) to keep the players immerse in its lore and actually made it that knowing the history of the game its vital to succeed, with limitless ( too much, sometimes) possibility to create your own unique clan. It's not perfection itself, buuut it's also a solid yes, buy it right there.
