Worth every penny!
For me, this game is one of the best story-driven adventures I have ever played! Let me tell you, I have tried quite a few (Telltale etc.), but this particular game would surely belong to the upper top 3. And now, I will watch the TV series and read the books.

Solid Visual Novel/Point/Click Hybrid
In The Pillars of the Earth each scene you have to solve a puzzle which will be your typical fare of using something in your inventory on the screen or combining items. After each puzzle scene there is dialogue in which you will be making dialogue choices. The puzzle parts are usually pretty straight forward but there is the odd time where I could see what they wanted from me but the solutionboggled my mind and didn’t seem logical. The visual novel parts were well done. The game did a good job of not making the choices black and white or good/evil. Some choices are timed where more important ones are not. At the end of each chapter you get a summary of your choices and some of the outcomes. If I have one gripe about the game was the story itself. It was pretty dry at times The ending was a bit different from what I was hoping as things seemed to go a bit darker before settling into a more typical happy ending. The animations, art and voice acting were well done The game required a file, “libpng12.so”, that wasn’t shipped with the game and after installing that the game started just fine. It opened on the wrong monitor. There was no config file I could find to specify which monitor to use and no in game option for it. Alt-Tab worked just fine. You can manually save whenever you want and there are checkpoints for those who don’t want to. While playing the game my total system RAM usage was 3GB, the total CPU usage was around 7% and my VRAM usage was 1.1GB. There were no graphics options besides resolution. I played using version 1.1.703 of the game from GOG. Overall whether you enjoy visual novels or 2D point and click games I can recommend The Pillars of the Earth. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it is very enjoyable for the majority of the playthrough and is solid on both fronts. a must have!
delicious graphics, great storytelling, remarkable voice acting, great music. it's a must have for every classic point-and-click adventure fan. i'm sad it's over but i am enjoying the afterglow. priceless game!

Great and grown up story!
Very good adventure! Not much in terms of gameplay/puzzles, so you won't get stuck or get mad while pixelhunting. This is mostly about playing through a long, engaging, grown up story. 21 chapters, and if you take your time it just might last as many hours. You switch between a bunch of characters, which might be confusing the first hour, but then you start enjoying the variation. Very high production values - great sound, great music, very nice environments! A bit cheap character animations but you get used to the style pretty quick. A bunch of moralic choices, but I don't know how much you can affect the story, but others have said that you can. All in all a great game, and I really prefer this style to all the impossible illogical pixelhunting adventures out there!

Faithful to Ken Follett's Book
The game is based on the best selling book of the same name (1989) depicting the trials and tribulations of masons Tom and Jack building a cathedral in a fictitious medieval town of Kingsbridge. You get a historical account of the feudal aristocracy mired in a war for the English throne and how political machinations affected the peasants, merchants and the church. I borrowed the book years ago and it was a great read. You get to learn much about feudal England, the cruelty inflicted by the nobles to achieve their own ends, the hypocrisy of the church and most intriguing of all - the architect of the time. You get to cheer the well meaning protagonists and jeer the well written villains. The game is a novella with light puzzle elements. Game offers hints if you're stuck. There is no right or wrong answer while in dialogue as the story carries on regardless of your decisions. The only negative here is the quick time action sequences which seem out of place for this sort of game. Quick action sequences involve a fast paced dot that you have to time to colored rectangles. Fail those and the game may end abruptly and you'll have to reload. Not a big deal since you can save anywhere. Originally, the game released in 3 seasons (3 books) and you had to pay per season. Now you can buy the complete collection from GOG for a few pence (on sale). Each book has several chapters you need to complete to advance the storyline. As the story progresses you will get to witness Kingsbridge go from a backwards village to a thriving city. It would be impossible to portray the depth of the book but the game does a good job of hitting the main highlights. Ken Follett was involved in the game, voicing one of the characters. I downloaded the game from GOG and as games are DRM free, I copies the game folder onto my laptop and played from the comfort of the couch. Game took me ~5 hours to complete over the course of several days. A potato can run the game. No bugs to note.
