This is a 4 Star Game, BUT...

I love martial arts movies. I can't name all Bruce Lee's Movies. I can't even name all the Bruce Lee movies I've seen. I'm not posing as an expert, but I have spent many hours cheering gormlessly at old videotapes. I understand that this makes me a terrible person, but I loved old Grasshopper and Kung Fu back in the day. My son and I still watch Karate Kid pretty regularly, and I intend to introduce him to Forbidden Kingdom as soon as he's old enough to see booze as a punchline. I love martial arts movies. This game is a martial arts movie. I LOVE this game. So... I shout 5 stars at the clouds! The combat system is a hoot, and the fighting styles are unique. The characters are epic and ridiculous. The twist is... well... not that big a twist, but who cares because it's martial arts movie, and the fight is epic! And... Yes. That IS John Kleese's voice you hear in the garden. So... Not an open world, but the maps were huge, for their day. They are packed with interesting NPC's, side quests and treasures so it does have a lot of fun exploration. There's not a lot of player agency, here, but there is a story. It is the equal of all but the very best kung fu movies, which means it's actually not really all that great. But people don't watch kung fu movies for the story. These movies are EXPECTED to be formulaic and predictable, and Jade Empire skillfully obliges. If you love RPG's, this is a Bioware classic. But, if you love Martial Arts movies, this is a Bioware masterpiece. Either way, buy it.

The only gripe I have...

.... is that it was WAY too short (and that's the only reason it got 4/5).. The music was absolutely amazing, the story was great (though predictable) and there were some really emotionally touching moments. A brilliant RPG!

absolutely adore this game

When I was a kid I watched kung fu theater on channel 17 religiously. So if you like kung fu this game is well just plain fun. :-D

Martial Art RPG

I won't bother about the story since it's laid out in the description. But I will explain a few things. This is an action RPG set in the... honestly I don't know when this is set in, but seeing as though mythological creatures still exist it must be way back in the times of China. The structure of the levels are fairly linear, you come across an event you solve it, you come across another even you solve it. A couple times you'll come into a town where there will be side missions. Combat is kung fu style based, you pick a style and you associate your moves to that style, and they all stem from what karma you choose (good/evil), and you can get friends to be party members along the way. I do believe there is also magic and weapons you can use/buy. What I like: 1: Mythology. I do see some games based in China, but none of them ever touch on the myths that have been a part of that land for thousands of years, and it's so refreshing to see some of that. What I don't like: 1: Story. It's just a product of the times, it used to be cool back when but now it's just predictable. And considering this is Bioware, that's a bit disappointing. Everything else is ok and works fine. Give it a shot if your wanting something different.

A very good old game

I played this game back on the XBox and loved it then. It has an interesting story, memorable characters and pretty fast paced combat. Just what you'd expect from a Bioware game (back before they sold their souls to EA). The dialogue is a little cheesy at times but it doesn't detract from the gameplay or story (and sort of reminds me of an old '80's movie at times, but in a good way). I also like the way the game justifies you being a darker character. In Jade Empire you aren't Good or Evil, Light Side or Dark Side. You are Open Palm, a kind and merciful character who gives of yourself to make the world a better place, or you are Closed Fist, a hard and merciless character who believes that by helping others you make them weaker and unable to help themselves in the long run. I definitely recommend giving the game a shot if you haven't, especially if you can find it on sale. It is worth it.
