Better in German

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I actually really liked Jack Keane. One of the most frequent complaints I heard about it was the voice acting and I never actually played it in English. So if you are fluent in German, play it in it's original language. It is quite funny - and I can imagine that many of the jokes and puns are hard to translate. Plus apparently the translator sucked. But I can say this: in German you have a charming, funny game with nice voice acting. Sure, the puzzles are nothing exceptional but the story and characters and humour still make for a good game. Tl:dr version: if you are fluent in German, get it and play it in German. It's fun. Just don't expect too much from it's botched translation.

Mediocre

Jack Keane is a by-the-numbers classically inspired adventure game. It's clear that the designers were fans of old-school standards such as Monkey Island (it even borrows some of the tropical themes). So why isn't this game great? It's all in the execution. The voice acting ranges from stilted and stiff to downright laughable. The writing itself isn't terrible, but it's not going to win any prizes for originality. The puzzles go from blatantly obvious solutions to head scratching absurdity and then back again. Still, if you're itching for an adventure game and you've already played all of the top-tier offerings, you might find something to appreciate here. The game isn't a total disaster, but it does require a little patience to get into. 3 stars.

Could be better

I enjoy playing adventure games and this is a fine snack in between serious adventure games. The main reason for this is that the game is quite easy and from my memory does not include any puzzles or mini-games. The plot is average - nothing too exciting. The dialog and humor are at some times funny and enjoyable and other times rough and unpolished. There are also some noticeable bugs in the game, like missing descriptions and actions that can be carried out multiple times and getting the same inventory items out of thin air. The game tends to need too much resources and thus seems badly optimized. On the plus side the game is sufficiently long. Graphics are nice. Characters are likable and at times wins you over with its cliche humor and plot. If I would compare it to other modern adventure games I would say it rates clearly below Pendulo's adventure games.

Boring wannabe Monkey Island

This game just fails on many levels to pull me in. Sure, everything's colorful, and the occasional joke even forces some chuckles. But it just doesn't come together as a good adventure game: it has little flair, teeny tiny environments, drastically variable puzzle quality, and a not very likable main character. It's also not very well optimized, with low FPS even on a (then) current machine. All in all, not recommended. There's dozens of good adventure games on this site alone, so give Jack Keane a pass already.

This is one of those games that have a bunch of little things that add up to become this big downer. It really needed more polish and more testing. There was nothing gamebreaking so I gave it a pass, being an indie title an all. I'll go straight to the bigger and more significant ones. -The voice acting of the two main characters is downright embarrasing and grating. They're not even trying. It doesn't help that Jack doesn't have a personality or charisma and is very generic overall, even the way he looks. -The game's writing is meh. It's not funny or witty or anything like that. The first chapters were started great but it feels the writers just gave up later as the game went on. When you see a generic Star Wars and LoTR reference thrown in all of a sudden you're just trying too hard. You click on a chair Jack says: "It's just a chair." or "Comfy!" -The plot is too thin and superficial for the game to be this long. It's apparent by Chapter 6 of the 13 Chapters. It gets the to the point where you're just running around talking with the same people with the same throw away dialog and clicking a bunch of items in every room you enter to listen to a description like the one above. It seemed like a bunch of filler to me. -Some of the puzzles are inane. On the plus side: -The graphics were nice and colorful. The style was different from most Adventure games so it was a breath of fresh air. Some of the locales were breathtaking. -Music was good but I wish there was more of it, since there are parts where there isn't even any. -In the voice acting department apart from Jack and Amanda the rest of the cast is pretty good. Especially Dr. T. -10tetacle tried. It's still better than the sum of it's parts. If you need to scratch that adventure game itch and it's below $5 like another reviewer said, try it.
