For precision platformer fans only.

2.5/5 based on first chapter only. I really liked what I saw and enjoyed it for the most part. It is very much a precision platform though and quiete unforgiving in a few places, particularly the last boss chase in chapter 1 which Im now giving up on after way too many attempts to be worth it for me. However, based on what snippets I saw from the other chapters and from what I did play, I can tell that this is a great game for its genre and a must play for those very good at precision platformers, and with enough patience and dedication I think most can get through that part. Im not quiete hardcore enough to want to attempt that section anymore after giving it a lot of good tries, after already managing to beat a few previously also hard sections. Though they felt more sastifactory and with a sense of accomplishment than this part did. But dont let this hold you back from giving it a try yourself. I think there is 4 chapters in total? There arent really any full play through I could find to watch the rest of the story, so that kinda upsets me that I have to walk away from a game without knowing the end to it. From other ppl playing it, watching how they also struggle for half the video length on that same last chapter 1 section, I think that spot could benefit greatly from a checkpoint midway! And seing how very few to none play throughs there are of anything after chapter 1 (I dont really find any?), and the very few reviews/ratings and players, I think this is a problem for many who simply cant get to chapter 2 and onwards! It really was an awful lot of precise yet also kinda random controls and landings and you reset it each time you fail and the guards are awfully close to you on that last chase with not even 1 second to spare for failure or you get caught. It it very sastifactory though when you do get the rhythm of it and can blast through some of it without missing. It doesnt get easier with the controls. I wont call them clunky exactly, because they arent. But they are also not totally smooth and responsive and at times feel very random and luck based if you manage to land right to have time to make the next jump, and you also move kinda fast. You will die a lot to this, but thats not really a problem because you restart fast and can run and carry on and keep the momentum. (Except on places like that last lvl, getting back up there pff.) This might just be a me thing though but that was my impression. The controls are few and can be rebound. Jump, hold on to walls/blocks, and interact. There is no mouse input at all. Being able to hold on to sides with mouse click would have made it so much easier for me personally. Precision platformers are not my main focus but I have played a fair few over the years, and despite not being good enough, or maybe better lets say dedicated enough, I think what I saw was great and has something to offer, but only for those going in knowing this in advance and knowing they are good at these kind of games, and have the willpower. I give it a big 2 star but bumping it up to 3 because Im sure this game has potential and content that could be worth more than I was able to see. I am sad to see it has zero ratings at all, but I think there is a good reason for it also, its simply too difficult and 'clunky not clunky'! So hopefully they can add at least a checkpoint or 2 in the hardest places, or something else to make it just a tad easier. I liked the dialogue stuff and the colours of it all. And the sounds and music was decent (though quiete loud on default!). ═══════ Two Unity analytic dll's present but appear inactive currently, both was set to read only and no logs are generated, so no points deducted for this. I would get it with a bit of discount for all these reasons unless you know its your vibe. 🐧 Arch Linux EndeavourOS

An Unforgiving Precision Platformer

I am writing the review from the point of view of a person that completed the game and made it to the end credits. It took me 7 hours to beat it. If you are good at these type of games then it would take 4-5 hours or less on your first playthrough. There are 5 main chapters + an epilogue and you will reach the end credits in the epilogue. The hardest part of the game would be the final boss in chapter 5 because you have to beat it 4 times doing 4 precision platformer levels. Also chapter 1 boss level will filter out a lot of players because of the insane difficulty spike in the boss level. The levels before that were not as insane in difficulty. This game is not for players that are not okay with dying over and over again to learn the patterns and strategy on how to beat the level. If you dislike platformer games that make you rage such as Super Meat Boy, Celeste, Geometry Dash, Dustforce DX etc then you won't like this game either. If I did not beat Super Meat Boy and Celeste before playing this game, I probably would have ragequit this game early on. I played the game on Windows 10 using Mouse and Keyboard. I did not experience any crashes when playing the game. The Keyboard Controls are responsive but could be better. One problem I have with it is that sometimes when I press a key, it does not register and this becomes apparent during the boss levels. Also I dislike that the game require you to bind a key to hold/hug the wall of a platform. I wish they did it where it is attach to your jump key similar to how Super Meat Boy does it where as long as you press jump key you are able to hold on to the wall. This will definitely help make the controls feel smoother and more responsive. It will make the game difficulty slighter easy from a 10 to a 9.5. The game does not let you rebind movement keys, it is set to WASD and arrow keys. This is what I usually use so it is fine for me however for players that use different keys for movement, this may be a problem for you. It only lets you rebind the Jump, Hold and Interact key. There are no checkpoints in the game between levels minus a few exception. If you die in a level you start over from the beginning of the level. Most of the levels are on the shorter side however some of the longer ones can be quite a challenge. Also this add a extra layer of difficulty for the boss levels because they are a lot longer than your standard levels plus the added time pressure of being chase by them. Not having checkpoints during a level is fine if the controls are super smooth and responsive however even a slight input delay can make you fail a level which is the case for a precision platformer such as Ingression. I will note the good thing is if there is multiple phases for a boss, once you complete one phase and if you die it won't make you start from the beginning but at the phase you completed. Thankfully the game is not that cruel. The difficulty is all over the place and is inconsistent in my opinion. some levels of the same chapter are really easy and others are really hard to beat. I feel that chapter 4 was easier than the previous chapters. I also did not like during bosses even if you did perfect platforming you could not gain much distance from the bosses. It does not rewards you for playing well. This was a problem for the final boss of the game where I sped through the map multiple times and the boss was behind me off screen and the next second it was on top of me. There was no room to catch a quick breather. I never got the satisfaction of being able to out run the boss. I know the devs wanted to make the player feel the intensity during the boss round but I think they may have overdone it a bit. There were times when I manage to get away from the boss quite a bit of distant away off screen and the next second he is on top of me and kill me in a BS way. I did like the portal mechanic that the game uses and the level designs are good. I like the art style and the background music adds a nice adrenaline rush to the experience especially during boss levels. I know I listed out a lot of negatives however this is a well made precision puzzle platformer with a few flaws that is holding it back a bit. I am going to give the game a 4.5/5 because I had a enjoyable time beating most of the levels and chapters while dying 3102 times to beat the game. The game will share the stats of how long and how many times you die in each chapter during the end credits. I bought the game on sale for $2.50 and if you can get the game for $2-3 and like these type of games then I would recommend it. It takes a lot of patience and if you want a nice casual experience I would recommend something else.
