In 2032 an Earth that knows only peace is forced to relearn the art of war.
Twenty years have passed since the population of Earth did a fine job of destroying nearly everything in one final struggle for power by the politicians and military leaders. Twenty years have been spent building a near Utopia, a society where currency and finance are irrelevant, a planet without hunger or poverty. All weapons have been destroyed to ensure peace. But hidden away in an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, a cabal of old-world magnates: ex-leaders, financiers, politicians, and despots, are planning a return to the greed fueled, hate filled past. And there in no way to fight them. Except this one last remaining Adaptive Cruiser – The Antaeus.
Antaeus Rising combines explosive action with powerful real-time strategy. Take command of powerful aircraft carrier/manufacturing platform. Create military units with your carrier using the most advanced nano-technology known by the modern world and lead an army against the forces of the Old World Cabal. Plan your assault from within your carrier and than enter your units for some third-person mayhem! The fate of world is in your hands, are you able to hold it?
Lead your army as a commander or take control of one of the vehicles and join the battle.
Customize your vehicles to make them fit perfectly into your current mission requirements.
Enjoy a storyline written by award-winning author Warren Ellis and narrated by Tom Baker.

Previous reviewer seems to compare this to BattleZone, it's really not like BattleZone and never was intended to be, but it is a modern remake of the classic Amiga/AtariST game, Carrier Command.
I still own the original CD-Rom version (Which still runs fine for me in XP) had I not I'd have snapped this up at the price it's being sold for on here.
If you enjoyed classic games like, Wild Metal Country, Infestation, Virus2000, you'll seriously enjoy this criminally overlooked game.
Thumbs up to GOG for resurrecting this ;-)
The title says it all really. The basic concept of the game is amazing. Kinda reminds me of the video game Wargames.
Being able to make your units, and -then- control them directly is a nice touch.
In all it totally deserves the 5/5 from me, best game I never played til now.
There's a lot to like about Hostile Waters. It's an innovative and unique blending of strategy and action, with a decidedly original storyline penned by one of the best writers working in comics today, Warren Ellis. The basic premise is this: global peace has finally been managed. The war machines, weaponry, and soldiers of the bad old days are decommissioned or destroyed. Only....not everyone was looking for peace. And a few of the hardliners have come out of hiding and launched a terrorist campaign to which the world is now defenseless. Or almost.... there's one of the old school nanowarfare carriers left, a mobile weapons factory known as Antaeus. It's been submerged and abandoned for some time, and the first few missions of the game deal with collecting the resources necessary to restore full operations. The Antaeus, when given the blueprint and enough fuel, can synthesize any vehicle or weapon necessary for the conflict. You are in charge of the Antaeus.
You get a wide array of vehicles to throw at your foes, and while you can pilot them yourself directly (thus the action part of the game), you will usually want to load them up with a personality chip taken from one of the soldiers that fought in the last war so that they can move about autonomously (under your orders, of course). Each soldier has a different personality and skillset, and as you find them you learn more about their history in cutscenes. The enemies themselves constantly regenerate until you can find and destroy the factories producing them, and there are often other story-related goals.
All this makes for a game that I for one have found extremely compelling, and paying $6 for it almost feels like stealing. Note that the boxed copy has a bug which fails to recognize the retail CD, requiring a no-CD patch to play the game at all. So even if you have a chance at the box, I'd still recommend this version. Saves hassle.
You are the commander of Antaeus, a high-tech cruiser that has been sunk in the last war and now lifted up from the bottom of the sea in a desperate attempt to stop a terrorist organization known as Cabal. The ship features a nano-factory, capable of producing helicopters, hovercraft and tanks almost instantly, given that you supply it with enough energy. For this purpose you will scavenge everything from cars to harbor cranes, take apart factories and clean up battlefields littered with remains of annihilated enemies.
You will be accompanied by a crew of fallen soldiers, whose personality has been recorded using experimental technology. Each one of the soldiers at your disposal has his own set of traits and skills - one of them is an aggressive helicopter pilot, another excels in operating a howitzer... The crew members react on each other, scold the ones they don't like and praise the ones they do. The voice acting is great, the cinematic sequences are even better. The story sounds cheesy at first, but the little twists are good enough to keep you interested.
The graphics is of course dated, but nevertheless very good. This might be just a personal choice, but I really like the clean look it has. If you dabble in 3D art yourself - draw inspiration from this game. What the artists could do with just a few dozen polygons per building/unit is amazing. The game environment is also fully destructible.
PROS
- Excellent gameplay
- Great cinematic sequences and voice acting
- Entertaining crew members
- Completely destructible environment. From buildings to the last deckchair on the beach - if it's not terrain, you can blow it up
CONS
- Minor pathfinding and target priority problems
- Despite all the effort missions might get a little repetitive at the end
- The story seems a little naive in some aspects, but is mature in other
- There really isn't much of a progression in weapons that can be equipped
- Field of vision takes some getting used to
Overall a great game.
I consider this game to be the best action-strategy game I've ever played.
If you can withstand the old graphics and you are into action-strategy games, I strongly advice you to try this game. You have "pilots" with different driving/piloting abilities and you appoint each of them to whatever vehicle you have available (but it would be better to assign them at their suitable vehicle according to their particular ability).
But apart from that, you can easily take control of any vehicle, at any time, if you prefer to do something yourself (like destroying an annoying turret with the sniper helicopter, before you send your pilots in the surrounding area).
The playthrough is about 20-25 hours long.
An amazing, but undeservingly forgotten, game that didn't get a sequel (or at least another game with the same gameplay and at the same setting).
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
