Heroes of Might and Magic® 2: Gold

This is one of my favourite games. It's fantastic. Only gripe (and it's kinda small) is that you can't play it in windowed mode. I don't know how many hours I sunk into this game in the 90's, but it was a lot. Grab it because it's great!

HoMM1 runs perfectly on dosbox. However, HoMM2 here has some problems with sound effects. If sound effects enabled, graphics stutter all the time and input is lagging as hell. But once you disable sound effects (down its volume to 0 in game settings) - all the issues go away. Still playable, but personally I cannot enjoy the game running like this. I spent hours of tweaking with this and didn't find any solution. So I guess it will go to the shelf until I figure out how to play it without annoying glitches.

Not much to say here. It's an awesome game. But play the window version (not the MS-DOS version), you can access it through GOG-Galaxy menu. I recommend you give this master a piece a try. It will be a 5/5 if it weren't for its super high difficulty level. YES ! you can actually lose the very first level of the good or evil campaign if you don't play smart.

I loved this game growing up. The music, the graphics, and everything to explore gave me hours and hours of fun. When you have your nostalgic goggles on, this game is pure pleasure. I bought this game and tried it again, (after spending much time with HOMM3) and you realize that the game is not as good as you remember when it comes to the game play. The factions are not balanced and all that matter is how much magic you have. The Armageddon trick is well known to all HOMM2 players and this old game can be exploited beyond belief. Don't let that stop you from getting this game. It will still provide you with hours and hours of fun!

Heroes 3 is what really modernised the series. 1 is really outdated, 2 is not bad but it's a little clunky in its interface. It is also much harder than 3 and frankly, it's enough that it diminishes the game. If you can forgive some interface issues and enjoy a hard turn-based strategy then this is the game for you. If you're not sure, start with Heroes 3, definitely the pinnacle of the series.
