Great art (audio/visuals), but...

I honestly feel riped off. Calling it a game is honestly decieving. I was expecting some sort of puzzle/platformer, but there was no platforming to speak of, and the puzzles were so easy it is really hard to even call them puzzles, and i wish that was an exageration. The game kept introducing some cool mechanics, and i was really looking foward to when i was gonna need to use multiple of them to solve puzzles or go trough some challenging platforming, but neither of those things ever happened. Instead, when you finally learn the last mechanic (some singing that alters the map a bit), the game ends about 15mins later. There is also no plot in the game. I give it 2 stars because the visuals are incredible, and also very unique, and the audio score was pretty good too. But there is no level design, no puzzles, no story, basically no gameplay. 2 stars is generous. This game could have been a short film and nothing would have been lost, in fact, it would have been improoved. I bought the game on a sale, paid half the price. I wouldnt pay that much again. If you see this game for 1 or 2 bucks, or for free, go for it. Any more than that is overpriced.

storytelling is subpar

Artists: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE learn to tell a story if you want to make a player (who PAID MONEY FOR YOUR WORK) sit through your game. Games are art, but understand the art form before you try to push the envelope. The first hour of playtime is tedious. The writing and pacing is deeply flawed. Protaganist starts the game by singing. She is happy. Then she loses her voice. She is sad. Lets be sad and lonely for an hour while looking at this gorgeous art and this melodramatic music. Given that there is barely any dramatic development or emotional engagement for the first hour, there should have been some major exploration of the play mechanics or at least something thought-provoking to do. Unfortunately, the mechanics lack depth. There is no inertia, no sense of mass to anything in the environment or the player character; nothing 'connects'. While beautifully animated, every input feels like a string of miniature cutscenes. That feeling extends to the game as a whole. I'd say this game is very similar to Candle, another horribly directed 'artist' game; some visual artists and musicians were looking to add game development to their resumes without considering the well established storytelling devices and play mechanics the medium has to offer. Lots of talent with no direction.

Meh: nice game, but who is it for?

Neat game, as for technical and design aspects. But it's a weird combination: - want to feel the game, through its ambiance? Nope, it's not a 2D walking sim. You'll have to deal with not easy platform sequences, which means it's definitly not casual gamers friendly. - want a splendid but challenging platform game? Nope, the moves are quite limited and the jump/double jump feel is "old school" and stiff. Compare it to Dead Cells or Celeste (difficulty appart), their moves sets are really enjoyable. Not in Gris. Here I felt like controlling a broom (before unlocking double jump), or an stiff umbrella (after unlocking the double jump). And you're not really in position to chose your way through the artsy level design, so good luck with chasing collectibles when paths are locked after you chose a direction (without you knowing you were at a crossroad). Totally subjectively, I prefer when a story is presented to me bit by bit. Not thrown to my face. Gris is like a shouting good looking kid: "HEY WATCH ME, I HAVE SOMETHING VEEEEEERY SAAAAAAD TO SHOW YOU!". Yeah, well, sorry, but Hollow Knight got me right here taking my hand and not saying a work. You damn Gris are nice looking but after finishing it, I can tell you I felt sometimes quite annoyed by you. Still 3 stars for the effort.

Pretty but boring

Unless you are after artsy presentation, the lack of fun factor becomes obvious quickly. This could have been an animated film, and nothing would be lost. Watch a play-through, because this is all style, and (nearly) no game.

Decent Visuals, Very Little Else

As noted, this game does indeed have greats visuals, both the aesthetics and animations are solid and will probably still look great years later. The only negative on the visuals is that there is some repetition in the platform and room assets used, which was a bit dissapointing. Everything else unfortunately does not stack up. Music is adequate for the game, but nothing that you would have a burning desire to listen to afterwards. The game itself isn't that long, making the price tage a bit hard to justify but considering some of the negatives, maybe it's for the best it didn't overstay it's welcome. Though the game controls fine, the actual gameplay feels rather uninspired. It's not so much that the mechanics are too simple (they are) and more that the game does little with these mechanics. On top of that, the story itself is rather bland and obvious. If you relate to it in any way then maybe it works for you, however for myself I just didn't get pulled into it. Ultimately I would say I left this game feeling rather dissiapointed, especially after all the praise it's been getting. I get why for other people this works, but for me it just didn't click; there are other games that are definitely more visuals-over-gameplay in style that I like (such as NaissanceE) that I also would have trouble reccomending because it clicks with me for very specific reasons. Overall, 2/5 (2.5/5 is probably more accurate): if you are interested in this game, maybe wait for a sale or price drop, though even with that I'm not sure if I would fully reccomend it
